No, they are not. But it is possible of course to make cars to U.S. spec in Germany, as is the case here.

Personally, I think the U.S. 5er and 7er rear looks odder.

And my 5er came with a much more squarish rear plate to fit this space at factory delivery.

The current 5 er and 7 er bodies as sold in the US does handle Euro plates. You just need to remove the US plate brackets and install the Euro plate brackets. The body is currently the same on US and Euro BMW's.

I think the only car that doesn't accept a Euro plate is the 6-series
