So, screw the misery suckers and make up your own mind. Look at the raw data, look at the "Repairs per vehicle", look at the warranty coverage, lok at the mileage or hp or handling figures, and make your own determination. Leave the reviewers to complain about which vacuum cleaner is best/worst. Heck, Consumer Reports just put the 135 as the third best overall car on the market today in their April car issue, and I STILL take that with a grain of salt. 1st was the Lexus LS monster sedan and then the Infiniti M AWD Sedan.

many good cars are polarizing. I drive saabs and MB diesels amongst my other vehicles. They have been perfect, ultra-reliable, ultra-economical vehicles, with the ability to provide a half-million miles of use without doing much to them.
But some will gripe about the saab, or the diesel and how it only has 120 hp (more than enough for anyone who knows how to drive properly)... I find the 135 the closest thing that BMW has had in a while to my E30... granted mine is a 318i, so a 135i has 2.5x more power... I wanted a nice, willing car that has compact dimensions. I think Ive found it in the 135i. I was looking at other convertibles recently too... Audi has a nice looking A4 convertible... but there is no MT and it is hard to accessorize how I like it. The 1-series really is the optimum vehicle when it comes to being somewhat reasonable, configurable, and overall very nice as a vehicle. |

I agree. There is that, and then there is also our overwhelmingly poor capability to comprehend science, mathematics and logic... We want someone else to do our thinking for us. Because of that, everybody wants their purchase validated, and since we are so enthralled in "keeping up with the joneses" (who we do not even really know), that we want to feel better then the next guy about our purchase. It is critical to read how some other vehicle is lousy, so we feel better about our own. Toyota tells their buyers that they are "sooooo smart" for buying their car. It works. people think that they are intellectually superior, until their car sludges up, or their AT breaks... but even then, they are soooo smart... they are validated and all is well... |

We wonder why America is hurting lately, with the economy, quality of our products, quality of our lifestyle. We keep doing all the things that have been proven to be destructive throughout world history. We get lazy, we want people to tell us what to thin, how to feel, who to vote for, etc, and then we want something to complain about. Go live in Darfur, you will get something to complain about, that's for sure. I don't care if my 1 is not as expensive as the M6 or 760Li. It is what I wanted. Most of the week, I am in my ZX3 and I have fun with it. On weekends and nice evenings out, I whip out the 135cic and have a freakin blast, and (most notably) I think for myself. I have a hot wife, a hot car, I live in a hot town, and I do fairly well in life. Screw the Joneses, I will enjoy what I have. Screw the TV, screw the mags, make up your own mind. If you agree with me that the 1Series is a great car, cool, let's chat. If you don't, then go buy another car and hang out with those people and chat with them and be happy. Simple as that.

The 1 series, 6 series and X6 will always get mixed reviews because BMW is constantly pushing limits in America. All models are limited in production and each car takes some getting used to. Just wait until every other manufacturer copies each body style. Acura has already leaked some teaser images to do battle over the X6. You either hate it or love it but obviously there is a large enough market for these cars to have competitors; car reviewers are just reluctant in giving amazing reviews for a "low end" model such as the 1.

I particularly enjoy the reviews where the author makes a claim that the 1-series is "overpriced" and then refers to it as a "poor-man's BMW." I've read a couple of reviews along those lines. That shows that the author is clearly thinking things through.

Maybe not in the same classes, but all four are RWD performance oriented cars with (fairly) similar price points. I have no problem with comparisons of cars with similar performance, but obviously some aspects won't match up (ie: 2 seater vs. 2+2).

Reviews do not make the car. In aggregate, a CAMRY probably gets great reviews, but the vast vast majority of them are probably non-car pubs (think of your local newspaper's "car" reporter, or the local TV station...)
BMWs as we all know are lightning rods for heated opinions. It's a brand that people love to love... and love to hate. That said, I think the 1-series was never intended to be a car for the States and was developed with a very European focus and consequently loses a little in translation.

Just a couple things on my mind about reviews and other comments made on this thread.
1. The 1er does evoke memories of the 2002...more often than we would think. I have a co-worker here in Iraq who commented IMMEDIATELY upon seeing a picture of my new 135i, "Wow...that reminds me of the 2002 I had back in 1974". It actually caught me off-guard when he said it. He is also not a car addict like many of us so I took what he said a bit more seriously. 2. About what ELITE said: 1ers being the Honda Civic of Bimmers....History lesson...the 90's Honda Civic's were designed and took many cues from 3er's of the 90's...Toyota did the same thing w/Toyota Tercel. So it should be the other way around...Bimmer does not imitate! (I know Elite was implying something else but it made me remember that old hoopla about Japanese company's copying European design cues...still continues today). 3. I have yet to see an American review that HATED the 1er. I have seen some reviews that questioned certain aspects of the vehicle but none that HATED it....the reviews I have seen that didn't like it were foreign (a British review and an Aussie Review come to mind). I could be wrong though... 4. Consumer reports reviewers usually specialize in a particular field. Their automotive reviewers ARE automotive journalists/engineers etc, etc...not some dude that reviews laundry detergent. 5. Most automotive journalists are paid to report on even the minute things that most of us would not even bat an eye at. Look at the Edmunds long-term blog of the 135i for example. The majority of the posts enjoy the 135i....BUT you can only comment on the virtues of the 135i so much....so you have to look and dig deeper to find nit-picky things to at least have a story....that is my take on it and I take those nit-picky things with a grain of salt because they just don't really matter to me....

I think something everyone often forgets when reading reviews, is that you must review the reviewer. With few exception most reviews are written by those not technically qualified to do so; or worse they are only writing for a target market and not making that known in their article. The problem arises when the reader no longer takes responsibility dissecting an article or author. Just because someone writes something doesn't make it true. Always consider the source, even from so called automotive magazines.

Take a look at all the awards N54 engine has won. That will give you a good indication how sick and amazing this car is!!!

One of the main reasons is BMW's options are expensive and most reviewers had their 135 loaded with option which priced like $42K+. When they started to compare cars in the range of $42K including its own bigger brother 335, 135 would always loose in the bang for the bucks category. Bfore I bought my 135, I shop and look around, none would touch the performance of my 135 with a drive out price (exclude sales tax) of $35K; and I got everything that I want and happy about my decision.

I think I've only ever come across 1 negative review on the 135i. All the other reviews have been consistently good. Even Jeremy Clarkson gave it 5 stars. Some reviews have mentioned that it's slightly overpriced or they aren't so impressed by the looks (always subjective), but so far nobody has dared to rip on the performance of the engine. Everyone knows how good it is.
If you have the links to any bad reviews can somebody please post them here I'm interested to see what they actually wrote. |

Even one of the supercars, the Gumbert (recently reaching #1 fastest car on Top Gear), does not even allow you to move the seat on the car because it would affect the F/B Ratio. All of it matters. The problem is that there are very few cars that even compare. "Sport Compact Coupe, 2+2, Premium" is a slim market. Most are either 2 seat or Midsize. So the 1 gets unfairly compared to other cars that have different wheelbases, different weights, different aerodynamics. In looking at the April 2009 Consumer Reports issue online, I did their car comparison tool. The only really comparisons were the RX8 and the Volvo C30, of which the 1 easily beat.

I think the poor reviews of the 1-series are from journalists who don't understand the meaning of the car. They just see a smaller version of the 3-series that almost costs nearly as much.
