As for your wobble. You should have used a thick bead of sealer/dampener on the top of all roof bows to form a semi flexible bond between the skin and the bows. BEFORE bonding the roof in place. Was that done? See pic. Green is bonding adhesive. Red is sealer/dampener

Just about all done with metalwork on this project. Just about time for some filler on the seams.

Roof bond tomorrow
It’s time. I’ve conned a couple friends into assisting with the bonding tomorrow morning. Gotta do it really early while it’s cool in the garage. This special adhesive from BMW sets up in 10 minutes. Even faster when it’s warmer. So, we will be working like an F1 pit crew
Ended up making 16 of my own clamps. I didn’t like the way any of the “off the shelf” clamps were hanging off of the sides.

Second batch of adhesive arrived today. Can’t do much with it for another week though. My pit crew is out of town this weekend.

lucky find
Well, I've given up on bonding the roof until we have cooler weather here. There's just not enough working time with the adhesive when the temperature is this high.
I've decided to move on to the front of the car. Most of it is all easy bolt on stuff. Although, I do plan a few tire room maximizing modifications. One of the things that needs doing is to relocate the horns to make room for the aux radiator. Being as picky as I am; I didn't really want to just fab up some brackets to mount them. So, Working with my local BMW dealer, I was able to find some (from what I know of) "non-existent" part numbers. The "BF" horn brackets being the most elusive of them. The front begins
Blew up the front of the car yesterday. Waiting on PPK parts to arrive now.
I’ve been on the fence about doing the entire ppk2 kit, or, just buying the auxiliary radiator and accoutrements separately. I’ve finally just decided to do the whole kit and add the uprated fan, etc. Not sure if I’ll go with the included ecu flash or not. Currently the car has the euro spec ppk flash. I’m told that it won’t smog here tho. I can’t get ahold of the guy that did the remote coding and flash for me. So, I may have to re-flash to the US spec. Need to do more research on that.

Haven’t posted much. But, I have been working.
Taking advantage of the increased space I have to work with while the core support is off; I finally got my GFB DV+ diverter valve installed. It’s been languishing in the glove box for some time now. I just dropped the three water pump torx bolts and was able to access the valve with a long 5mm T-handle from the front. Paint was also ordered up yesterday. BASF Glasurit Line 55 for the color. P6H. It’s for real now. A few other random pics... I’ve got some work to do in the shock towers as well. Gotta make more room for more camber. A keen eye will notice a mistake I made when adjusting the suspension. I managed to break off the adjuster nub on the top of the strut! That will he headed back to TC Kline for repair soon. CSF radiator needed a minor bit of cleanup to work with the 850w ppk fan. I’m very impressed with the amount of electrical bolstering BMW adds to support this fan. The wiring and relay are beefy.

Aprons cleared
My plan is to paint as much under the hood as possible. Since this is a complete color change, the aprons will still be visible with the hood up. They need to be painted now don’t they?
Center bolt for the strut support bar is a size that I don’t have apparently. I’m guessing that I borrowed the correct socket when I installed it originally. I’ll churn one up tomorrow and get those out of the way. Then I’ll begin paint prep in these areas.

Your work and posts are awesome and very very helpful to me!! Keep it up!!
I've done the 1M front conversion but I really want the rear. I've made a shopping cart with ECS with 17 part numbers and the total for me because of shipping and Tax comes to 5,466.00 see attached PDF to see my cart. I think I'm going to pull the trigger soon I've been saving/drooling over this project for a few years now. I just need to find a body guy in my area willing to do the job hopefully for a good price on labor, I'm simply not talented enough to do the work myself.. The roof project looks sweet but for now I'm wanting just the rear 1M conversion.. Anyway Thank you for the Motivation/Inspiration!! |

Two of each with the exception of the harness. Just one of that number is needed.
These parts are to re-locate the horns to the top center of the re-bar as per the PPK instructions. NOTE: Since posting that info, I’ve learned the the 1M has the horns mounted behind each end of the re-bar. Those brackets come with the horns themselves.

Really appreciate the pics. Yeah I recently discovered I can mount the horns bare to the front bar so less $$, parts, weight even if it's ounces. Now to figure out whether to do the PPK radiator or just Fab a bracket or use a bolt for the driver ductwork.

Your list looks pretty good. Exhaust will need changing. Same with the trunk tub and the lines to the charcoal canister. Inevitably there’ll be more little things you’ll need. So, be ready for that. Brackets for the side skirts and a few weld studs come to mind. If you’re going to have a shop do the work, you might talk to them about sourcing the parts. They can buy them at wholesale (typically 20-25% off list), then, if they’re cool, will pass that savings on to you. May very well be better pricing than ECS and no shipping costs. Where are you located ? |

I definitely appreciate it! Im just nervous, I hope it will be worth it, I think it will be! I have a full berk exhaust currently. I don't really want a quad or dual exit exhaust I hope I can make the current exhaust set up work but I'll be ok with changing it out if needed. I almost only Track/Autocross this car so performance for me comes first and looks are a very very close second. What wheels/Tire set up are you planning on running? Could we run the 1M spec wheels of 18x10.5 ET27? I want some thick tires back there to give me an "excuse" to go big turbo I've seen some people squeeze a 315/30r18 on a 1M. I'm not sure I would go that big right away but I would like to put a 305 in the rear. I'm curious what your plans are? I'm in a little town Aztec NM, the shop I'm going to talk to is in Farmington NM I plan on talking to them Wednesday hopefully I can get this project started in December its winter here and race season is over so now is the perfect time to get this project done.. Its crazy seeing the cardinal stadium in your first pictures. I grew up in the Deer Valley area and moved away a year after the cardinal stadium was built, I miss Phoenix |

Aprons
I’d posted before about painting the aprons. Here they are freshly shot with color. No clear yet. Notches for more camber can be seen here.

More apron deets
Satin finish 2k clear. A bit glossier than I’d like. But, it’s done now.

Reassemble
Putting things back where they go and adding the PPK harness and relay for the upgraded fan.
