I hate Massachusetts

I forgot to get my 1 inspected and so I got a ticket for it this morning. I don't mind paying the $50 fine but what seems ridiculous is that it is counted as a moving violation that is going to be 2 points on my insurance. That stupid ticket is going to cost me somewhere around $350/year for the next 6 years. That's over $2000 for forgetting to get my car inspected!

Of course I'm going to have to appeal it and hope that somehow they can make it a non-moving violation. Anyone have any luck with that?

It's certainly worth a shot!

Fwiw, I believe it is listed as a moving violation in all states that have inspections, since you are driving (in effect) an illegal car. Stinks either way, but for the $$, you'd be foolish to not try to get it reduced. The fine is okay, but the surcharges are only going to the insurance companies (it's BS, IMO), and I'd think that there may be a decent chance that the courts will work with you.

The inspection due date for mine was entered into the iDrive when I picked it up.

contest it... offer to pay 'court fees' if needed... they are usually pretty easy to over-turn if you make the effort.

Damn! That does suck! Was it due in October?

A few years back I got pulled over in Waltham for a sticker violation. I'd been on work travel for a couple months almost continuously and my ex didn't realize the inspection was due. I think it was my genuine astonishment that made him give me a warning and I had it fixed later that day. But seriously, I thought it was always a warning the first time for that. He must have been a real dick.

I am glad that it's a reminder for service with BMW - Peabody called me up to schedule the inspection this year.

I won a ticket I appealed for no front license plate. I agree, Massachusetts does suck.

There every 18 months you can get a speeding ticket. You pay it, you pay a small fee for "traffic school" which you can do online now, and no points on your license, no insurance penalty.

I didn't know you were supposed to fight them in MA. I have two that I'm waiting to age off my record.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. The last time I received tickets in NY and NH, they were not reciprocal to MA (the NY Trooper even told me to just pay it and it won't show up on my MA insurance -- it didn't).

Does anyone know if this has changed and what border states MA does have reciprocity? I know they are not part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC), but they are part of Non-Resident Violators Compact (NRVC). The RMV website does say they share information with other states, but doesn't list specific states and is very vague.

Been doing a bunch of searching but can't find anything definite. Any MA licensed drivers receive any recent tickets in NY, CT, NH, VT, ME or RI?

i like when old threads come back to life

ny is the only out-of-state ticket i've gotten. it was a speeding ticket, but i plead guilty to a lesser charge (rolling through a stop sign). i think that one is on my record though...

I've gotten a fair number of tickets in NY, but not recently.

On my first road trip in my then brand new '96 318ti Sport, I got pulled over twice in one weekend by NYS Troopers. Got a ticket the first time for speeding, but the second time he let me off with a warning. (Funny story, my registration was in my manual zipper pouch right on top of the speeding ticket from the day earlier, I quickly slid out the registration hoping the trooper with the flashlight didn't see the ticket).

I got nabbed again in my '99 E46 on I-90 near Rochester. Then again that same year on I-93 just north of Manchester.

All during that time I continued to have the highest SDIP rating. Yet, the SDIP page on mass.gov says:

"Out-of-state incidents
Each out-of-state incident (traffic law violation or at-fault accident) is counted as one surchargeable incident."

I don't use a radar detector and I'm driving faster today than I ever did and it's been years since I've gotten a ticket. I did see this article in the globe a couple weeks ago:

Headline: Putting the brakes on speeding tickets
Date: Jul 31, 2011
http://www.boston.com/news/local/mas..._campaign=8315

"The number of speeding tickets handed out across the state has sharply declined, dropping by more than one-third since 2008, as budget-crunched police departments scaled back traffic details to focus on crime."

This definitely correlates with what I see driving on 495, 93 and 128 each day.

Sorry, guys. NOTHING is worse than VA. The only state in the country (and DC) that doesn't allow radar detectors. Going 20 miles over the speed limit is an automatic reckless driving ticket which is considered a criminal offense! It's the same as DWI if you can believe that sh!t. So, mandatory court appearance and you better get yourself a lawyer. All told, it's about a $1500 mistake.

Yeah, I'm a bit bitter. Going to court next month for my 3rd time.

Yes, I'm aware of VA and I would agree it's one of the worst, if not the worst. That sucks. Last time I drove in VA I was very cautious.

(I actually don't hate MA at all, just piggybacking on a MA/ticket related thread. The only thing I don't like tickets stay on your record for 6 years).
