Ok, so what kind of cars this guy likes?

Clarkson says a lot of things that he himself doesn't even mean, but it is exactly this personality of his which makes his show entertaining.

When he reviewed the M6, baby Aston V8 Vantage and Porsche 911, he said that he hated the M6 for its stupid complexity but HAD to have one, he said that it's an ugly car but every time he saw it drove by he thought "God that is a good looking car." He contradicts himself A LOT, therefore all you should be doing is be entertained by him, nothing more. He's just like every one of us with premature judgements and unstable opinions.

Richard Hammond and Clarkson went to do the down-to-earth thing after the review of E90 320d, Hammond picked the new VW Passat and Clarkson picked the Mazda 6, but before he ended the segment, he said :"So there we go, if you want the best car in its class, buy a BMW 3 series. If you want to be perceived as a human being, buy one of these!"

See? He DOES think the 3 series is the best car in its class despite it being butt ugly and unimaginative AND that its only a 320d, he just likes to criticize things so they become more dramatized therefore interesting.

BTW, he also liked to bitch about the poor quality of recent Mercedes-Benz cars which I found more funny than anything. MB quality IS poor, but he criticized in a way that made it entertaining.

Top Gear is one of the most entertaining show ever.

As Xens said, they have their distinct way to bring out their extreme bias (each one of them) opinion on cars to make the show funny. Again, with such constrast to a weird looking vehicle, this is just free advertising for BMW.

Clarkson is widely regarded as one of the most enfluentual people in the motoring trade. After being in the audience of Top gear in the summer I can say he is an hilarious person. He is wrong about this though.

I agree. The more people say a certain car is ugly or they hate it, the more it will make people want to buy it. It's just human nature. Look at all the flak the 5 and 7 series got when they came out, and just look at how many there are on the road.

This guy is an idiot and not just because he said something about BWM. He hates anything American built, yet he was the first one on the list to get the Ford GT. It's also part of the show to make stupid remarks about a car and at the end of the segment says something like "and yet I cannot help but like it."

I'm going with Nikki on this one - I still LOVE my car. I don't care what Clarkson has to say about it or any other BMW he's driven. He's the way he is to get a reaction; which he's done. If you've seen the show before, especially over the past couple seasons... every fast/expensive car he drives is the BEST car he's ever driven. He'll contradict himself at least once in the same breath. It's just the way he is.

I also don't think the show's pro-British / anti-American, etc. They take the piss on everyone and anyone at every opportunity. It's part of the show's appeal. It will be interesting to see the American version of Top Gear, which is slated to go to air at some point soon - don't think it'll be the same though. Hammond & Clarkson's personalities are what make Top Gear worth watching!

I honestly don't see anything wrong with that, up until right about now, Amercan cars have been fairly bland/uninteresting/unreliable for as long as I knew about cars (I'm in my 20s). If I wanted something cheap I'd go for Japanese, if I wanted something expensive I'd go for German, if I wanted something fast I'd go Italian. Let's face it, if you were a big fan of American cars in the past decade of so, why are you reading a German automaker's forum?

Clarkson LOVED the Ford GT, he had a history with it. Actually both Hammond and Clarkson loved American cars build in the 50s and 60s as they both spent big bucks to get them. I personally am not old enough to like cars from those eras but if Clarkson wasn't as old as he was he wouldn't be buying the Ford GT over other super cars. So of course he criticizes the car and OF COURSE he buys one! As he said somewhere in an episode "Super cars don't need to be good, they just need to make you feel good inside."

And as a counter point, when they tested the Audi TT convertible, Nissan 350Z convertible and Chrysler Crossfire convertible on the Isle of Man, all 3 of them hated the Crossfire noting how cheaply it was built and how it failed to steer. But it was Clarkson who stepped out and said: "Mate, that Chrysler had me stunned." Although James May predicted he'd say that, in the end Clarkson chose the Chrysler over the other two.

Clarkson is a person with that traditional sense of British wit and charm, never really telling you the truth, but often hiding it somewhere beneath sarcasms and jokes, making you stop a bit to think about what he said and say "Ah Clarkson, you clever old bastard!"

BTW, Clarkson called France a country "you have to drive through to get to Italy" and James May called the French "treacherous wood burning peasants" And all 3 of them think French cars are rubbish.
