They may also be hedging on the fact that they will be a day late and a dollar short when this finally gets to the US market and is lining up with other, more powerful performace cars in the same price range. This will probably be a fan-boy car so how many are there who will seriously pony up the money (and not be willing to spend a bit more for the M3)?

M3 is close to $15k more expensive than estimated 1M price, similarly equipped.

So is TTRS.

Cayman? Even worse.

What are you comparing to?

Where are you getting a base 1m price of 48-50k?

I'm betting it'll be closer to 45 than 50.....

IIRC, what I was look at the increment of M3 coupe over 335i coupe, and 335iS over 335i, average the two, and use that multiplier for the 1M, since it's going to basically be a 135iS with maybe a couple M parts and badges thrown on, from what I can tell through the rumor mill . . .

I'll go try that, and report back.

Eh, maybe not.

335i coupe = 43150
335iS = 50150
M3 coupe = 58400

335i to 335iS = 1.16

335i to M3 = 1.35

Average of the two is 1.255

135i = 36350

* 1.16 = 42166

* 1.255 = 45619

* 1.35 = 49072

So, I'd GUESS somewhere between $45.6k and $49.1k BASE PRICE. ASSuming I get the range and they hit the middle, that's $47,350 BASE price.

That is NOT gonna be far off.

I'd say that in general, we're probably better off if it's MORE expensive. Hopefully that would mean MORE differentiation from 135i / 335iS territory, and closer to M territory. As in more power, tighter suspension, bigger brakes, lightweight parts, better seats, etc.

I hope so; I really hope the 1m doesn't develop the stigma of a car that's simply a want-to-be ///M car.

I'm eager to see what will differentiate the 1m from the 135!!

If your talking about an exige or elise, 6'2 here and I fit perfectly.
The car is like a glove. (A helmet on me in that car may be a problem.)

If your talking about a 1er I'm good there too!

I Love the exige. I want to buy one. However the cost is just too great, as I would need a 3rd car (can't/wont drive it in the winter here).

I hope the 1M will be my middle ground. I love my 135!

But if the 1M approaches 55k with what I want, I may break down an get an exige if I can get a dealer to get me the right deal.

If not I won't be too sad and just keep the 135i as I can't really think of a better car for the class/cost.

What in the world makes you think they're going to offer an M that outperforms (though probably not by a lot) a 335is for a penny less than a 335is?

BMW gave themselves no room either pricing or performance with this car. It has to fill the tiny little gap between the 335is and the M3 both in price and performance. The limited production acknowledges how thin this market slice is.

Let's face it, BMW pretty much screwed up with the M3 this generation and the slapping of M badges on everything proves they are just in it for the cash grab

lol...

There's always going to be people who want a 3 over 1 series. Do you really think they'll price "an affordable ///m car for younger people" about 8k less than an ///M3?

Since I have been busy I have spent this afternoon looking at - "My dealer says this...." threads and I begin to wonder if they have their M3's confused with the 1M.

Also something being run about is the car is not as limited as it is made it to be. It will be on the market for just under a year.

Scott - can you tell us some of the M3 features described in those posts that will not be incldued in the 1M. For example, DCT or CF roof?

Perhaps you can put them straight once and for all and provide all the details on this thread?

price sheet striptease

I think that BMW should "enshroud" the price sheet in a multi paneled sheath, let it tour the country, and at each stop someone can remove a section of the sheathed price sheet.....giving us a tantalizing peek-a-boo at the sales tag for this car.
Start the tour now, so we can "savor" the mystery longer!

...."is that a "4" or a "5" poking out from the zipper edge ?"....oooh I cant tell!

Not sure I understand this statement. Do you mean that BMW is thinking of increasing the production numbers? Or that the 2,700 production number, that's being thrown around, is not accurate (too low)?

Thanks,
Leif W.

"Also another false rumor being thrown around is that the car is not really going to be as limited in production as what we had announced before. However, it will be on the market for just under a year [and thus will indeed be very limited - to just 2700 units per the announcement]."

Ah, okay I understand now. Not what I was hoping to hear but thanks for the clarification.

If this statement proves to be true; I believe it would be contradictory to that of the interview with Dr. K. The interview can easily be found on the m-power.com website.Dr. K notes states that this car (1m) was aimed at the younger individuals who may, or may not, be able to afford an M3. By limiting production, pretty strictly (2,700), that would contradict his ideology - completely.

With the next MY of the 1er coupe being the LCI (say 2011.5), leaving approximately 1.5-2 years (total) of LCI 1er coupes remaining; wouldn't it be logical to offer the car for the remaining 1.5-2 years?

Lets go back to the E46 ZHPs which were offered with the LCI updates for the E46 chassis. The ZHP package was offered from '04.5-06; which was the end of the E46 Chassis construction.

The 1m, obviously vastly different from a package, is still an item for which BMW could reap profits from. Why would they have the opportunity to offer 1-2 MYs of the car, but choose to run 1, directly going against Dr. K's ideology?
