Build Your Own 1M

Tinkering with the BMWNA Build Your Own configurations, I am happy to see that the 1M options are wonderfully simple.

I was wondering, however, what is the weight impact of the 1) Premium Package, 2) Convenience Package, and 3) Heated Front Seats.

I've become very appreciative of lighter weight, but I don't want to pass-up any options that would just be a wash (break-even) weight-wise.

I ordered AW with only 2 options: HK stereo, and Premium Package (the only way you can get lumbar support in the US).

I hear you. I wish I could get her loaded up sans the power seats, don't need them or their incremental weight. Loved the Vader seats on my former 95 M3, a plethora of manual adjustments. There is enough practicallity with the other features, that I'm willing to make the trade-off should they add some lbs IMHO.

Mine is fully loaded b.c i needed power seats (2 drivers). convenience package i just got b.c i wanted comfort access. ANy extra weight will be taken off from track days anyway. Ill be getting lightweight wheels for the track with sticky tires, lighter exhaust, and a few other tid bits to drop enough weight to accommodate for the extra weight in amenities.

Some nice lightweight batteries out there. I have a dry cell in my Boxster that shaves off 20-25lbs compared to the OEM battery.

I went fully loaded because I needed one or two items out of each package.

I've never used sat nav.

Of course, I've also never used shaped skis because I'm either too macho or an anachronism.

Most people including myself do NOT like the 'simplicity' and prefer a more flexible and 'complex' itemized ordering approach. I wish I could get comfort access a la carte, like on other BMW models.

Agree. Check the Porsche build site. There are almost TOO many options, some are slight little color accents in the interior and such but at least the person ordering has a choice. I'm a little disappointed that BWM doesn't offer performance seats.

I, too, am disappointed that Comfort Access is not available ala carte, but does anyone have stats on each of the package weights?

Bingo! +1 and same here. I want my BMW to still feel like a BMW sometimes. Personal preference, I guess.

+1. I wanted lumbar support, but could only get it w/electric seats in the package option. I also opted for the heated seats since it gets chilly up here in the NE. I know, I know...lame but...

It seems like there are gripes out there, but I think BMW was really trying to make this a reasonably priced M car, so variability in paint, options (snrf, etc.) was minimised to mitigate price creep. I am willing to overlook some option strong-arming to get this type of vehicle.

I had some fun building my own on BMWUSA.COM. I then found out my dealer had 1 allocation and that was gone 6 months ago. The other six dealers in my area have been tapped out of the 1M coupe for months also. Do I sound frustrated? Good, cause I am.

Just a question, why would the weight added to the car matter unless; 1) You are racing the vehicle 2) Push the vehicle often ??

Inquiring minds would like to know

^ agreed FJS. People think way too much into it. You think you will really notice an extra 50-100lbs? Extremely doubtful. Order the car with the options you want and don't think about weight.

no options to fully loaded with the exception of heated seats is about 38lbs difference.

38lbs is easily remedied with a lightweight battery and muffler that isn't the size of a dinner table. Or better yet, get some lightweight wheels and tires. Reducing unsprung weight is much more beneficial than reducing sprung weight.

Taking a large shit before heading out on the track doesn't hurt either!

And the owner that also does these items on their car without the extra doodads is still 38 pounds lighter..

Very true. That being said, I wonder how many owners here would be able to tell the difference between a stripped 1M and a 1M with an extra 38lbs of sprung weight (present company excluded as you are the chief driving instructor ) I loaded my car up because it's my DD and for the majority of the miles I drive it, those items will be very useful to me.

If I want light, I'll go all the way and buy a stripped Miata or finally build my Caterham 7.

LOL.. I still think 38 lbs seems kinda on the light side.. but if so.. I agree.. it would likely need to be a hardcore track person to tell the difference... course if you put 40 lbs in one area... yeah, it might be noticeable.. can't say I always removed the spare when autocrossing.. so it's not something I would be concerned about...

in any event. the lightweight muffler and extra batter option would cost about $1500 or more. an expensive diet plan..
for me.. the biggest issue with any of the options would be power seats removing height for a helmet....
