Build Your Own 1M
Tinkering with the BMWNA Build Your Own configurations, I am happy to see that the 1M options are wonderfully simple.
I was wondering, however, what is the weight impact of the 1) Premium Package, 2) Convenience Package, and 3) Heated Front Seats. I've become very appreciative of lighter weight, but I don't want to pass-up any options that would just be a wash (break-even) weight-wise.

Mine is fully loaded b.c i needed power seats (2 drivers). convenience package i just got b.c i wanted comfort access. ANy extra weight will be taken off from track days anyway. Ill be getting lightweight wheels for the track with sticky tires, lighter exhaust, and a few other tid bits to drop enough weight to accommodate for the extra weight in amenities.

I went fully loaded because I needed one or two items out of each package.
I've never used sat nav. Of course, I've also never used shaped skis because I'm either too macho or an anachronism. |

Most people including myself do NOT like the 'simplicity' and prefer a more flexible and 'complex' itemized ordering approach. I wish I could get comfort access a la carte, like on other BMW models.

Agree. Check the Porsche build site. There are almost TOO many options, some are slight little color accents in the interior and such but at least the person ordering has a choice. I'm a little disappointed that BWM doesn't offer performance seats.

I, too, am disappointed that Comfort Access is not available ala carte, but does anyone have stats on each of the package weights?

It seems like there are gripes out there, but I think BMW was really trying to make this a reasonably priced M car, so variability in paint, options (snrf, etc.) was minimised to mitigate price creep. I am willing to overlook some option strong-arming to get this type of vehicle.

I had some fun building my own on BMWUSA.COM. I then found out my dealer had 1 allocation and that was gone 6 months ago. The other six dealers in my area have been tapped out of the 1M coupe for months also. Do I sound frustrated? Good, cause I am.

Just a question, why would the weight added to the car matter unless; 1) You are racing the vehicle 2) Push the vehicle often ??

^ agreed FJS. People think way too much into it. You think you will really notice an extra 50-100lbs? Extremely doubtful. Order the car with the options you want and don't think about weight.

38lbs is easily remedied with a lightweight battery and muffler that isn't the size of a dinner table. Or better yet, get some lightweight wheels and tires. Reducing unsprung weight is much more beneficial than reducing sprung weight.
Taking a large shit before heading out on the track doesn't hurt either! |

LOL.. I still think 38 lbs seems kinda on the light side.. but if so.. I agree.. it would likely need to be a hardcore track person to tell the difference... course if you put 40 lbs in one area... yeah, it might be noticeable.. can't say I always removed the spare when autocrossing.. so it's not something I would be concerned about...
in any event. the lightweight muffler and extra batter option would cost about $1500 or more. an expensive diet plan.. for me.. the biggest issue with any of the options would be power seats removing height for a helmet.... |
