My 1 let me down this morning
I have had my car for just about a month now. It failed me on the freeway. I was driving to working and the car chimed. It showed a temp light, then a low ressivor light or something like that. Had zero power and pushing the gas pedal at all just made the car chime at me. I was able to get it to the shoulder. Over 2 hours waiting for a tow truck. There was oil all over the front underneath the car. Dealer said it had a overhead code, but the temp gauge on the dash was still at 160 as I just started it for the morning about 10 mins or so.
Glad it was a CPO with full warranty. Hope this is a one off and when I get it back I will be good to go for a long time. Anyone ever heard of something like this? |

Temp gauge on the dash(of 135i's) is for oil temp. Sounds like your waterpump or thermostat just took a dump. Seem's common at 60K to 80K miles.
One easy way to remember which icon is which is... was it a "sail boat"(coolant) or a "tea kettle" (oil). I bet it was the sail boat. IF it was your waterpump... you could vote in my survey... e8x electric waterpump failure poll... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=798195

Yep sounds like a water pump failure of coolant leak. Either way, the coolant reservoir was low/not effectively cooling the engine. As dackel said, very common to BMWs in the that are approaching 100k miles. Glad you're under warranty, too, since a new pump is close to $500!

Does anyone know how much a water pump and install cost. My paperwork did not have the price for the work and when I e-mailed the service person they never returned my e-mail. I just want to see if the extended warranty is paying off.

About $1,200 to ~$1,400 at most BMW dealerships. You can buy the parts from vendors(BMW dealerships who do mail order) who advertise on our forum for ~$500 waterpump and thermostat. Labor will run an hour or two plus a gallon of coolant.

Yes first light was a sailboat looking that was yellow then hit red in color. The second light was a box with waves close to the bottom of the box.
The car just hit 19k miles. Its very low miles. I am not sure if it was oil or not. That's what the tow truck guy said when latching it down to the bed. I will let e everyone know when I get it back what it was. Thanks for your support. |

Hydrolock (ingesting water) will also destroy an engine, but the computer doesn't check for that. |

Well it was the water pump. They said it was a short from the positive cable off the battery that fried the unit. They said the cable was loose which is why it fried.
I took it back to the CPO dealer I bought it to look at why the cable was loose. When driving it there it really seem to have a lack in power so I asked them to look at that too. Thanks everyone. |

Wonder if that had to do with the recent battery cable recall...

Hello Everyone,
Thank you again for all who posted to make me feel better that my new to me 1 just had a fluke. I am glad to have her back. I did miss her a lot as its been gone for almost a full week. So as stated the water pump failed due to a loose wire on the positive battery terminal that cause everything to fry per BMW words. I asked both BMW dealers and they said this was NO way part of the recall and this issue was due to whoever left the wire loose. Weather it be the previous owner or a BMW tech who forgot to tighten it. If I read my paperwork right it said R/F Seat is where the cable was fried at. The recall is further back according to them. Both dealers though there might have been some sort of stereo system upgrade that was done and ripped out before the car was traded in thus the loose wire. This wire also caused the power loss. BMW dealer said it threw some codes in the computer that kind of limped mode the car in a way to cause it not to go full power. After replacement of the bad wire and removal of the codes in the computer the power was back. They also found some front wheel sensors to be bad and replaced that as well as the brake pads. Everything was done under warranty. The paperwork looked like it would have been expensive... My factory warranty end in October and the CPO warranty end in end of 2015. Maybe this was the calling I needed to look into an extended warranty. Any suggest which to go with? |

Just be glad it was all covered under the CPO because it would've been a freaking arm and leg$$$$ for all that if not.
