Oil draing plug delete- mod

Never seen this here before, so I will like to share it.

Replacing your oil drain plug with the Fumoto Oil Drain Valve you can drain your engine oil without tools or mess. For less the $30! I thing this is awsome. http://www.qwikvalve.com

Do you have one already installed or is this just an FYI?

At first my hesitation would be what if you ran over something and the valve was opened by accident but then I saw that it has a locking feature.

It looks like a simple functional design that would be very useful but maybe someone here knows otherwise.

The first driving event I ever put one was back in 2001. We had an instructor in an NSX that installed one of those the night before the event. It failed and he dumped oil onto the track resulting in his car, a corvette and a BMW all crashing into each other. The oil spill was caused by the Fumoto drain valve failing. I don't know if it was due to improper installation or a failure of design but based on that sole experience I don't recommend the item.

I'm not sure I'd be willing to sacrifice the safety and security of a traditional bolt for the convenience of the valve. Plus, getting your hands a little oily during an oil change is just part of the process.

Maybe a nice magnetic drain bolt.

It works quite well. I was surprised on how strong of a magnet it is. I change my oil every 6K miles.... and I was really shocked at the amount of metal particles that I found on the UUC drain plug. After the third oil change... I only get microscopic amounts of metal dust on the magnet now. Its worth it to use on of these plugs.

It would be nice if the oil drain valve had a magnet attached to it somehow. The selling point of the drain valve to preserve the life of the threads on the oil pan. It's one thing if you're doing your own oil changes and know what you're doing. If you leave it to someone else, you introduce the risk of having the threads stripped which usually results in having to replace your oil pan which is quite costly.
