0.3 sec by official numbers. Not a noticeable difference.

why ask? (just wondering)

In my opinion, Difference will eventually get bigger and bigger once high-speed comes into play. Not to mention launch capability of manual vehicles.

If what you want maxium performance out of your vehicle, step will not be suitable for those reasons.

If maximum acceleration is your objective, there are several cars other than the BMW 3-Series, some for considerably less money.

go for manual apart from being a bit faster in acceleration is also has better fuel economy and more driver involvment.

But there aren't that much people who can shift as fast (or faster) then the steptronic. Especially in America where everybody is used to an auto and don't have that much experience with manuals...
I love the steptronic, it's still sporty and very comfortable.

do you have to learn how to drive a manual from an instructor?

For a long drive, I dont see any difference in top speed or smoothness of ride. But for a quarter mile or for steep climb, like going to mount everest, a manual will be at an advantage. What do you think guys?

I will never own another auto. The tranny's have practically been disposable on all the auto's I have owned before. They're are nowhere near as fun and I find them better in traffic not worse. I used to hate it when my auto trany would shift from 1st to 2nd non stop in traffic. Unless the traffic comes to a stop I can pretty much keep it in one gear the whole time with my manual.

There is nothing better then riding the RPM's as high as you want them before YOU decide to shift.

Yes...BMW requires your to pay $500 for instruction from one of their Vorlagentreiber or Master Drivers . These guys come straight from Germany, and have considerable F1/NASCAR experience.

I agree, that's why I can put my steptronic tranny in manual override and change gears when I like as well. And then use DS or D when I dont like. Best of both worlds.

Enjoy your car.

The BMW steptronic is about the best conventional automatic you can get, I personally love it and thought it was incredible.

But nothing has been more fun than working the 3rd pedal and shifter, this is my first manual and I'm addicted to it like crack.

If you're concerned with the 0-60 times down to 0.3 seconds, then obviously you're better off with a manual transmission.

Socom said in part, "...BMW requires your to pay $500 for instruction from one of their Vorlagentreiber or Master Drivers . These guys come straight from Germany, and have considerable F1/NASCAR experience."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++This is indeed news. There have been very few who have both NASCAR and F-1 experience. The Andrettis and AJ Foyt come to mind but I don't recall any from Germany with experience in both venues. Do you? Someone may have made the point but quoted acceleration times are logged by trined drivers. Most lay persons can achieve better straight line acceleration with modern automatic transmissions than they can with manual transmissions in otherwise similar cars. It takes a great deal of skill to achieve maximum performance from a manual while basically all it takes is a heavy foot with an automatic. Note. This doesn't apply to a '50s era automatic transmission.
