101 or the 5?
What do you folks take up and down California, and why? Also, how the is the speed-trap situation on each?

Hwy 5 is so straight and boring that it's just plain tedious. On the other hand, it's the fastest way to travel the length of California.
Hwy 101 is much more entertaining; better scenery, turns, hills, etc. It'll take much longer though. The CHP is present on both roads. Where are you driving from/to? |

Is there that much of a difference? I don't recall 101 taking significantly longer than the 5. :iono:
I drive from the OC to Silicon Valley.

there's also the 1 hwy which follows the pacific coast but its takes much much more longer time. i took the 5 going up to san fran only because it was faster plus you get to cross the bay bridge and when i took it there wasn't many cops, but it does get scary at night cuz i heard they like to hid and its pure darkness

The 5 has more scenery like rolling hills and stuff that might be pretty this time of year, the 101 has the nice coastal scenery. I took the 5 up from LA to SF, and the 101 back to LA...never again...its neat and fun the first 10-15 min, then its just too long...might be nice if you are the passanger.

Last time I went to SB it took me as long to get there as it does to get to LA on the 5.

The 5 is the fastest route, but if you want to enjoy the drive, then take 101. Hwy 1 is a really nice drive, but it will take much longer.
If you doing this next weekend, you gotta take 101 and stop by Bimmerfest in Santa Barbara.:w00t:

I managed to get from SJ to L.A taking I-5 in about 5 and half hours. We never stopped for gas! I thought we were going run out as I am hitting close to 4000 rpm's on the climb up the grapevine. Once we got there the 405 #$%^ed me and we ran out of gas as we pulled into the gas station. Good times...

I like the 101, but it's slower.
Going to Laguna Seca, we'll take the 5 north to 46 and cut over to the 101 at Paso Robles. On the 101, King City is a notorious speed trap area.

Heads up on the PCH:
Be careful going around the turns too fast on the northern part of the 1 between San Loius and Monterey, especially after heavy winds/storms. I cracked a wheel driving up there (wasn't even going that fast) on a modestly sized rock that had fallen the night before. No cell reception, either. Driving 10 miles on a cracked wheel to flag down the first person I see sucks; luckily it was in my beater. Having made the trip from San Diego to Sacramento many many times (or East Bay sometimes, too.) I have to say the 5 is all sorts of faster. Plus Cops on the 5 generally will not pull you over if you are going under 80 (most likely will pass you) which is NOT true of the 101. If you are going anywhere on the central coast, like dude said above the 46 is the way to go. -Jim PS hi, just got my 135i mid-April and thought I'd check out some 1-forums. |

I travel the 5 almost too much back n forth between Orange County and Stockton. Ive gone other ways but 5 is the fastest. You learn routes around it if you notice heavy traffic ahead, but all-in-all 5 is faster. It is boring as hell though unless you're below the grapevine.
