Recommended that you do so to update the firmware, but if you're buying new there probably isn't a need. It should be able to drop right in and run regardless if you do or not.

Just noticed you have a 2011, this is the install guide for an N55 : http://burgertuning.com/instructions/n55_stage1.pdf

careful with any clips. some connectors break easy so don't be to rough with them. take your time and be careful.
