I think we've just ran out of steam in discussing this - I think we almost have all possibilites covered like 1erMDrive or M2002 or M2979 or 1ersDriveM135. Unless BMW sprung up a surprise - like M ein.

Hehe, my money is on M Turbo. It's been the best name suggested thus far.

I was told by somebody that know the name, that it will be one of these: > ///M Coupé > ///M Turbo > ///M 2002 > ///M135i > ///M1 > ///M2 Now, which one, I do not know. |

I've convinced you can cross 3 off of there. M2- Would be BMW's biggest naming confusion to date M 2002- Its not a 2002 M135i- This isn't the 80's. The M branding for decades now embodies the series/class as a whole and not a specific car within the rank. That leaves us with excellent options! Now, where's my coffee.

not M 2002 because not 2002 cm3 not M135i because not 80's not M Coupé because then the E88 will have to be called M Convertible so then either M Turbo M1 because a 1 Series (ex: 3 Series > M3) M2 because next 1 Series Coupé will be maybe called 2 Series Coupé (ex: 6 Series) But because M1 is old supercar M2 is confuse as the actual 1 Series Coupé is not yet a 2 Series Coupé So as I said before M Turbo is the only one left. But what does not make any sense is that in the future all M will be turbo. |

It was interesting to note that Scott mentioned about a GTS spec 1 which that terminology we hasn't really seen before - would it be ///M spec 1?

Let's look at it this way - if we are in BMW's shoes -
a) It needs to convey it is a M, ie M needs to be in there and in a way that people won't think it's not a true M. b) It needs to convey the series where it comes from and it doesn't cause confusion. c) ///M1 is ruled out Although ///M Turbo, ///M Coupe are good names and they had previously used one of it before, it doesn't convey 'b'. Which leaves 1///M a possible still as they have to have x5///M for obvious reason, and they can easily to do it for the 1. The only other option would be to use the internal code ///M E82 which would be confusion, or add something else to ///M1 to distinguish from it from the old car like ///Ms1, ///M1s, ///Mt1, ///M tii 1. ///M2 is possible if they are going to rebadge the 1er Coupe into a 2 - but that would cause more confusion. I still think calling it the "1 series ///M" as the official name, and with just a ///M badge still is a possible option. But 1///M could possibly be the strongest and easiest to explain.

///M1 is still my first choice....but if 1M is out of the running, I would have to say ///M Turbo or ///M Coupe would be nice as well.

I dont understand why people are so cool with ///M Coupe as a name but are so ruffled when ///M1 is mentioned.
If youre in the camp that says that the ///M1 moniker should be preserved for heritage sake than why are cool with BMW using the ///M Coupe moniker on a car that isnt Zed derived? You cant have it both ways. That being said, ill take ///M Turbo |

Honestly, as long as 135 doesn't appear anywhere, I can live with most of the other suggestions I have seen...

I also dont see why the ///M1 is considered a supercar. It has a 6, from the 70s, Ferrari's bastard child Dino had a 6 and everyone denounces that car. But I guess thats for another time. |

A few ///M Coupe owners on the board have been ruffled about it--but not the vast majority.... Maybe I am just too young, but the original M1 doesn't do a whole lot for me. I can at least look at a 2002 or E30 M3 and appreciate it....not the case, for me, with the original M1. That's why an additional use of the name, in logical order as the rest of BMW's car lineup ///M's, would make M1 the most logical choice.... We will see...

I could really go for M Turbo tho. Sounds kinda kickass and is as unique as the car. I mean BMW loves to say how the 1er is the spiritual successor to the 2002, why not give it the Turbo name as well, seems like the right way for the marketing department to go. |
