Stock vs ESS - Reverse Review

With the Evolve tune on the way, I have just flashed the car back to stock and I found it is a great opportunity to compare stock and ESS again. Often you have to review a mod from without to with, and not often you get a chance to experience the other way around, unless you are AlpineM3E92 who has a stock AND a ESS tuned 1M! I had an opportunity today to review the stock tune, and now I can better understand why I have written some of the things that I have written from my original review.

You can find my original post here:

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=614477

As soon as I jumped in the car, I can feel the 'lack of power' in the lower rev range. Now I understand why I said the power delivery was smoother and more drivable with the ESS tune. I think the problem lay with the overboost function of stock. The delivery of the ESS is immediate, whilst power kicks in around 3.5k with the stock tune. This two stage delivery from the stock file actually make day to day driving less predictable. Yes, it felt amazing when you hit 3.5k but I would rather have the power on tap right from the start.

I can understand why BMW would have tuned it this way. In second gear with ESS tune, with stock tyres and wheels you would lose traction WOT making the extra power useless. However, what about right foot modulation?

Unfortunately, I have to cut short my review short as Evolve just sent me back my tuned file. Not going to start the car at 1:42am, but will definitely try it first thing in the morning. Stay tune for the Evolve R stage 1 review.

What made you go from ESS to Evolve? You seemed pretty happy with the ESS.

I have dps, exhaust, and CAI coming in. No word of ESS developing any stage 2 tunes for 1M. Giac and Evolve are the only ones who officially have and support higher rating tunes for extra mods. I am two hours away from a Giac dealer, that makes Evolve remote tuning a very good choice. I have just flashed the car, so will wait till the morning to see how it goes. .

Well, the intention of the thread is to round up the review of ESS. I guess every company has to see if there is a business case for their products, and for ESS I think their M3 mods are definitely where they earn their money from and putting their resource there make a lot of sense. While 1M improvement would be down to 3rd party products and tune, their M3 supercharger can still have room to move. Especially 2nd hand M3 coming in cheap and in abundance make it a much more lucrative business.

IIRC there had never been an announcement from ESS a stage 2 tune is being developed, but I understand there might have been individual who have got some form of answers direct from them.

Agreed.
No, I am curious about what you are going to tell about Evolve tune after reading your ESS and reverse review/after ESS back to stock, so that's the one I am subscribed to

You might have to do the conversion. I was around 10.3L/100km and dropped to 11.7L/100km.

NO WAY!! Only thing dyno tells you is WOT in steady state mode. Gotta do a lot more than that to get a good driver.

Agreed, and that what I was about to say. Preferably with a datalogger on track as well. Combining the three you will have a great idea on how good a tune actually is.
