Why is it that none of the aftermarket downpipes have flexpipes as the OEM units do?

I would ignore the size, I just made it to show the pieces.

yeh, that can't be proportionally correct. If that was the case we would HAVE to get a full cat-back exhaust system. those pipes look tiny

I'm guessing those are the catalytic converters in the down pipes and the resonator where it goes 2 into 1, but what are those bulges in between the DPs and what I think is the resonator??

When you remove the flexibility from the system, with a solid DP, other parts will have to absorb that movement (worst case scenario is that your turbo housings crack, which is very expensive). All the DP manufactures on here claim that there is no harm, but we have yet to see any long term result from running DPs. It could very well be that the OEM system is overly cautious and that solid downpipes will have little effect on a system over the average life of a car, but I'm willing to put my money on the BMW engineers having a better idea about stress loads then a few small tuners.
The classic quote from tuners in the Subaru community regarding flex joints is simply "They will fail at some point". Granted that is a load of shit and a good scare tactic at best, there where many subie people putting uppipes in their cars w/o a flex joint with no ill effects. On the 135i who knows but I sure as hell would not chance it. At least on the WRX a non-flex uppipe moves with the engine but on this car it seems as though there is no uppipe so thats not an issue however since the engine is mounted independently of the exhaust, the DPs may be a problem if there is no flex section...
