51k miles 2009 135i rear main seal leaking….
51k miles 2009 135i rear main seal leaking….
Well that’s what it looked like this past Friday. I have my oil changed every 5k miles with ELF full synthetic at my local BMW shop. And during my last oil change my mechanic called me over to take a look…and sure enough the rear main looked and felt wet. Out of 10 being a total failure and a 1 being brand spanking new out of the box he said it was about a 3. CRUD! Thank god for CPO program. Went over to BMW and we had a little talk. They and I agreed to give the car another 5k miles. The car had its valve cover gasket replaced earlier in the fall. And the oil we spotted on the rear main may have been from the leaking valve cover. Let’s see where things go! So have any of you ever had a problem with this $15 part that requires 6 hours of shop time? |

I've heard of a few main seals leaking on high mileage cars..but no, that's not a common issue like valve cover gasket.

The oil pan gasket leaking can also look just like the rear main. I thought my rear main was leaking but it was just the oil pan.
