135i front rotors - grooved wear; Is this normal?

Hi guys

I have 128i with 135i F+ R calipers on stock 135i pads and rotors. I have had these for about 1000-1500 km.

Im experiencing front rotor wear that is different from rears.
The rears are smooth, the rotor wear does not catch the fingernail.

Both front rotors instead have slight grooves, resulting in the surface not being smooth but wavy enough to catch my fingernail.

What should I check? Do I need to bleed my brakes? Adjust pads...?

My rotor surface Pics, notice how the flash breaks up on the grooves:

This is caused by pad under-run or a pad that is slightly smaller than the rotor surface. You will experience this with OEM or aftermarket pads, it's nothing to worry about.

You can compare different pads and get the pad that may cover the entire surface of the brake rotor, but that is a lot of work, not to mention the many sets of pads you must purchase.

I don't think he's taking about the lip on the outside and inside edge of the rotor but rather the actual grooves on the used friction surface.

Thanks guys. I'll just live with it, next set of rotors and pads I'll look into better options

Grooves

I have similar grooves on my front left. Took them to a BMW mechanic and they said it was caused by small rocks or dirt getting trapped in gap between rotor and pad. After a couple laps at the 'Ring the groves leveled out somewhat, but wear was on different part of rotor now. Took the car to a different dealer, and they said same thing about the debris and how the break pad may now be wearing the rotor down normally now and it may eventually resolve itself.

I'm not sure if I buy the answer but BMW will not warranty items damaged by dirt or small debris. Both shops said car was still safe. Like you, I have started pricing different rotors (I wanted them anyway).

I've had a number of track days and also had periods of regular street
driving and have seen similar grooves form on new rotors. In my experience it was caused by my choice of a brake pad with a higher friction material and was not caused by stones. Both the pad and the rotor will wear in together and
the groves seem common in a car driven more aggressively even with OEM parts.

Thanks for the reassurance.
