Another cool feature and part of the cold weather pack (I believe was just a piece of coding) is the cabin warm up. This allows you to start the car with the key in the ignition port, switch it off and then within 45secs restart the car without the key in the ignition port. This means that you can turn your heaters on, walk away and lock the car while it warms up/defrosts or whatever...pretty cool if the car sits within your sight i.e. on your drive.

I have 2008 car whit automatic air condition system. There is max cooling and Rest function.

So what is Cold climate version ?
It was the package that included heated seats, ski bag and headlights washers, I was replying to someone who thought the REST button was maybe a part of that package. Unfortunately not, I would much prefer to have REST than MAX (Which I never use since when it is very hot the AC blows to the maximum until the interior is at comfortable temperature)

As our Bimmers have used fobs since about 2006, US 1 series cars do not have ignition positions.

IIRC, on my '99 E46, position 0 was everything off and position 1 was ignition on, but motor not started (accessory position). This is equivalent to what BMW calls "Radio Readyness" which results from briefly pushing the Start button without starting the engine.

And since the 2011 online manual says nothing about "Residual Heat", it seems that feature has been dropped in favor of the ganged dual temperature control (the All button).

Literally know my car very very well and didnt know this.

If it is cold out and you have been driving around such that your motor is warm, you can use the following feature after the car has been shut off:

"Rest"

basically, once your car is warm, even after shutting it off, you can tap the rest button and your vents will turn on and continue to blow the warm air from the warm fluid still in the heater core. This can provide heat for a good hour or more. So when you are sitting outside waiting, and have your motor off, or a huge variety of other winter things, you can stay warm! and be eco friendly using heat that would otherwise be wasted anyways.
It is very cool and useful. Perfect example today, tinting my car in my friend's garage, super cold, just threw on rest the whole time, warmed eveyrhting right up. Got back in my car and it was like 90 degrees.

I didn't know that, thanks for sharing.

Here's another something about 1's you might not have noticed. If you order the car with the Premium Package you get a heated steering wheel. If you order the car with the M Sport Package you get the fat M Sport steering wheel. If you get both packages together, you get the unheated M Sport wheel but are still charged the full cost of both packages - there is no adjustment for the deleted heated wheel.

after a track run?

I would think the REST button could be used to more quickly cool down the engine after a track run (obviously keeping windows down). Perhaps also after pulling off the interstate & immediately into a rest stop.

One thing I did not read is if/when this system eventually turns itself off.

I think it was mentioned on page one of this thread but it will only activate when the outside "ambient" temps are below a certain point.

Up to 15 minutes. Battery must be charged and out side air temp must be below 77o F.

Funny, I was just thinking about how I'd have to look this up - I knew about the feature but wasn't sure how to use it! Thanks for this timely tidbit!

mine is 2010 and it says Max, but I remember reading in the manual (with iDrive) page 94 something about ventilation after parking the car.

Great feature that I've used countless times while waiting in my car for work to start. With the cold NY winters and ridiculous traffic in the mornings, I often arrive to work a half an hour early and have the option of:

A) Turning the car off and sitting in a gradually freezing car.

B) Leave the engine running for the heat and wasting 30 minutes of idle fuel.

or

C) Utilizing the "Rest" feature and legitimately being able to stay comfortable for the majority of the wait without wasting fuel by leaving the car at idle.

Your satisfaction will vary, and some people will always find a reason to complain. It's a free feature, and if you discover a use for it, all the better.
