What deters you from an N51? Longer warranty and 3SI. It’s down on compression but that’s inconsequential as the N51 can be built upon just as easily (if that’s what you’re planning).

My understanding, happy to learn more. Def plan on building it, it's why I bought it. its inexpensive in general by todays standards

I have heard the n51 can put out as much hp as the n52, but idk, bit skeptical I guess. Is the n51 factory tune just that bad for emissions sake?

if one can add a 3SI and tune to an n52 to get x more hp , it would then stand to reason one could get more HP or equal to N52 with 3Si with a tune, however the n51 already has a 3 stage, so that is not adding up for me.

Input very much appreciated as I have passed on some nice cars already.

An N51 with the same mods as an N52 will feel the same (if being 5-10 HP down on paper). Having valve cover gaskets and other items STILL covered under SULEV warranty? Priceless.

My N51, 6 speed got totaled recently. If you want a full parts car, Insurance should be auctioning the car soon in the Seattle area if they haven't already.

Not even 10 hp. You are looking at maybe 4-5, max, for brief moments.

The factory tune is BAD. A simple tune will gain you 20 pounds of torque and 15 horsepower in the midrange.

What is the SULEV Warranty about? BMW extended for some reason?

You’re welcome!
For the record, I have 65k miles on my N51 and other than a few preventative items and some upgrades, it has been solid. No repairs or breakdowns to this point.
It is a limited, summer only weekend driver though.

Just over 88K on my N51, 12 of which are mine with two owners before that. No problems in my 12K, and while the OFHG was replaced by a previous owner, that particular issue shared with the N52.

The N51/2 engines both have a very solid reputation. Can't speak to the previous owners' behaviour—and it didn't come with much in the way of maintenance records—but mine's a daily driver and apart from not revving beyond 3K until it's warmed up*, I don't baby it in any way.

*: Or, rather, when I feel like it's properly warmed up. No (stock) way to tell for sure. Thanks, BMW.

One of the reasons , I purchased the 128 was the rep of the engine, and honestly, the one is an overlooked platform, which imho handles well, relatively lightweight, ( by todays standards) , easy to work on. Revs great, reminds me of a e30 M3 and e36 M3 if they were one car. I have had quite a few very nice cars as you can see by my sig, and I just love this car.
