My wifes 2008 128i cabriolet has 12K miles on it. I heard the ticking sound before but after a few minutes and you rev the engine it would go away. Today was different I let it idle for about 5 mins. revved the engine and you could still hear them ticking and when it goes back to idle ticking is still there. I copied the ist page of this thread ans sent an email to the dealer to see what they have to say. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

not uncommon being done a second time, as now BMW has you replacing the lifters and the rockers as well with new revised parts!

If I had an n52 that had the "old" parts I would want it changed, even if the "ticking" was intermittant. I do not see a "real" problem without the change but I would not want my nice car to sound like an old worn out car. When an engine gets really old, the clearances open up, the oil pressure drops, and it is not unusual for the lifters not to be "pumped up" at idle. When oil pressure increases, the lifters fill up and the noise goes away but you wouldn't be able to tell if it didn't because of the other noise the engine makes when it speeds up. It seems like the early n52s also do not pump up the lifters at idle sometimes not because the clarances in the engine are too big or oil pressure is too low, just because of a design issue. I bet the n52s do not have oversized clearances off-idle either but why should a nice new car sound like a worn out one?

For those of you out of warranty... have you tired using Seafoam in the engine oil and sucking it into the intake manifold ? I have been reseaching carbon build up on D.I. 135i's... and I came accross quite a few people that have used Seafoam to sure ticking and lots of carbon buildup. Of course that was for other car makes... but IF it worked on car "A" it should work on car "B"!
For God's sake, don't put seafoam in the engine oil, or in the intake. What's wrong with you? Just... No.

2007 X3

We had this clicking on our 2007 X3. Bought X3 used with 12000 miles. Took it to local dealer (Kuni in Beverton Or). It was not clicking when we brought it in, wanted to keep it over night. Next day they called and told us that BMW USA agreed to replace the head under warranty. The clicking is a well known problem. We were very happy that they agreed to repair without hassle. I had a Audi A4 that burned oil. I had to threaten th sue before Audi did the repair under warranty. My suggestion is to make your claim as soon as the problem cames up. Do it in writing and keep a record of when you hearing the clicking and under what circumstances.
