135 idling funny

My 135 coupe has about 45,000 miles on it. I've noticed it idling a little funny, especially when the engine is still cool. It would skip a beat or something every once in a while. I thought it might be the spark plugs and when I took it in for service about a month ago, they did replace the spark plugs since it was due. It didn't help.

Since the service still idling funny and has slowly gotten worse. Today it seemed to start bucking slightly when accelerating and when I stopped it was idling much harsher and at a higher RPM. I was driving around in the hurricane yesterday and although I didn't go through any large puddles perhaps the intake got a little wet? Still, it should have dried out.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong? I'm thinking maybe an oxygen sensor? Also I have a JB3 - the plug-in-the-wires-yourself version - and I always worry a connection is going to come lose and screw up my engine.

I've had my '09 for about three months and it has always done the "skipping a beat" thing at idle, especially cold. Go my plugs replaced at 30,000 as a scheduled maintenence. No other symptoms, though.

Driving it to the dealer this morning was so rough. It shuddered really badly under acceleration as if I was riding on square wheels. It's suddenly gotten much much worse since I first posted. I almost pulled over and had it towed but I wasn't too far away so I tried to coast there as much as I could.

Now it's just waiting to see whats wrong with it. It's only 5 months out of warranty and has 45k miles on it. I'll be really upset if it's something expensive.

Just got the call from the dealer, I need FOUR new injectors. The other two were replaced a year ago under warranty. The other four old-style injectors are apparently crap.

Cost is going to be about $1100 including parts and labor.

Can I get this done much cheaper somewhere else or should I just trust the stealership? They did give me a loaner car and can fix it today so it's tempting to just let them fix it and pay.

In the meantime, I'm pretty pissed about this. A car with 45k miles on it should not have 4 injectors go! I hope they get recalled or there is a class action lawsuit. Either way I'm going to contact BMW of America and complain.

My dealership offers a Fuel Injector Cleaning service for around $160 and I have always thought that it was foolish. Maybe I was wrong.

I'd let your dealership handle the service and beg them to give you some kind of discount. They can always knock off 10% on parts. As much as it pains me to say it, consider it a lesson learned. If you wanted a cheap car to maintain then you should have considered a Toyota.

I know it expensive to maintain. I'm not complaining that the injectors plus labor cost $1100, I'm complaining that they failed after 45k miles! They should last much longer than that. BMW is a luxury brand. They are supposed to be well made cars. And if the injectors are indeed as crappy as they seem to be, BMW should step up and recall them.

Maybe its time for an intake valve cleaning, mine was doing this at a cold start also, you could really tell by listening to the exhaust note. I know this post is old but maybe look into the walnut blasting if you havent fixed the issue yet. No check engine codes right? Just idles a little rough. These motors have alot of blow by oil that can get into your intake system.

Gio,

Sorry to hear about your troubles...

Did they happen to give you the stored codes? Ive had quite a relationship with m1ne. Four fuel pumps, three injectors (proactively replaced under warranty), 1 cam position sensor, & 2 turbos.

After these, i got a limp mode the other morning. My idle has always been terrible and im starting to get hesitation under WOT in 4th, 5th & 6th (my favorite gears).

Just curious as im going to have an independent shop scan the car and would love to know the injector codes?

Phil

^ you typically just see one of the cylinder misfire codes which is why it can be difficult to determine whether the misfire is the result of the plug, coil or injector.

Gio, get used to it man these cars are junk. Hpfp/injectors/coil packs/water pump & thermostat/noisy armrest/rattles/water leaks/ETC. ETC. are very common problems. But the car is fun to drive so we put up with it. Does that make it right? No, it doesn't. I wouldn't even waste your time writing BMW a letter they don't care, as long as their sales are up they're good.

I had a very similar experience and the dealership covered the walnut shell blasting under warranty as a good-will one time service.
