1. This is my first new one, but I've owned a used BMW before.

2. When I was in college in the mid 90s my parents bought me a used 1986 325e sedan that was my first BMW. I only drove it for about a year and a half as my parents then sold it because they got tired of paying for the repairs. When I bought it, it had about 109k miles on it and had normal wear and tear for a 9 year old car. I've wanted to drive a new BMW ever since -- I bought a Honda Civic out of college instead to save money. It was a good little car for the past 8 years. Now it's time to have some fun!

3. Buying

4. I'm putting about 50% down, borrowing the rest from BMW

5. 2.9%

Cinci330i - the pics look awesome! My excitement level has officially been kicked up a notch. GAH, I sound like Emeril. I bet you cannot wait until tomorrow when you get to pick it up. Is your dealer The BMW Store? The production slot that my car was assigned to was originally a BMW Store production slot.

I bought mine from Jake Sweeney BMW. Sweeney is a long-time Cincinnati dealership name but the BMW end of things isn't as well-known. I initially had reservations about buying here vs. the BMW Store (where I've bought in the past and had a very good experience) but as it turned out my SA at Sweeney's (actually Shaun Sweeney - part of the family) went the extra mile to help me with my trade. My '01 540i had lost a ton of its value  and their trade-in offer left me about $4k short of what I owed, so I was going to bag it and wait a while longer. He made some phone calls and found another small-lot dealer who would pay $2500 more for the trade. This left me $1500 shy so he kicked in $500 more and I paid the remaining $1000 to pay it off. I figure it was worth it not to have to go though the process of cleaning it up and selling it.

Anyhoo, that's my story. And yes, I'm chomping at the bit waiting for tomorrow . My wife is working tonight so I get to play Mr. Mom for my 2 boys. I'm sure I'll keep busy. Tomorrow will be a long day at work!

Anyhow, I'm trying to figure out how your monthly payment is so low. Mine is $618 based on a $43,145 MSRP, 36-month 12k/yr. If I put your setup into BMW's calculator it comes up as $513/month... What magic did you work to get a $60 smaller payment?
Cinci, what Money Factor, Residual, and Tax rates did you use for your calculations? I had .00195, 64%, and 7.75% respectively. I actually submitted my numbers to some "dealer types" on the board here, and they while they were a bit lower than what my dealer provided (to be corrected at signing), they were for all intents and purposes, in line with what I disclosed in this thread. And I'm not sure how it is in OH, but in IL, trade-in's reduce the taxable cap, so there is some savings there. Also, I've used TONS of lease calculators (some from this board), and many are indeed high in their calculations. Perhaps you got ahold of one??

A little off topic, but you umentioned miles... I'm terribly curious how many "trouble-free" miles I could get from a BMW. I only know that I typically get anwhere between 150K-200K miles from cars I own, having to typically only pay for such things as alternator, water pump, and other such repairs/replacements...the usual things. Given US cars have a reputation for being about as unreliable as any out there, and given how many miles I typically get from my US vehicles (ok, mostly highway miles, and yes, I tend to own cars for awhile), you'd think I'd be more willing to attempt an answer for the BMW....BUT...the horror stories I've heard with respect to "cost of ownership" beyond the warranty might just scare me away from figuring that out first hand. Makes me wonder though...

I just used what showed up on the "Build your BMW" page on the website. I don't know what money factor I've got, but I believe he said my residual was 60%. Tax rate is either 6.5% or 7%.

The payment I came up with online pretty much matched what the dealer had offered me. I was actually OK with that payment, but my interest is piqued now that I see some lower rates. I just want to make sure my ducks are in a row before I start signing and writing checks tomorrow.

It sounds like I need to do a little more leg work today

Thanks for your input!

A great thing about the new BMWs is the maintenance program. Everything except tires is covered for 4 yrs./50,000 miles. If history is any indication, you'll be bringing your car in for a couple of minor things during that time period. Now the expensive part begins at around 60,000 miles. This is when "Service II" comes due, and you'll be looking at several thousand dollars to get through this one. (someone might have some hard figures... I don't) After that you'll be good for a while, but when big things start to hit, like starter, alternator, water pump, etc. Then you're talking some big bucks.

This is one of the reasons I decided to lease. My lease term is shorter than the free maintenance period, so I'll never had to worry about it.

I'm not sure what the March lease terms are, but if you locked yours in during January or February when you applied for financing, the going rate for MY part of the country (I've heard they can be different for various regions?) was as I disclosed earlier. You didn't mention your money factor, but the residual you mentioned for a 330i is low. Look at this link to see what the February lease rates (January rates were almost identical - and ADD 2% to the listed residual values for a 12k/year lease!!!)... You might want to look around for a different calculator also. I found the one on BMWUSA was high (don't think it's that sophisticated).

Many lease for the same reason(s).

As for "regular" maintenance repairs beyond the warranty...most I could do DIY as I have been for most of my adult life, so an alternator here, a water pump there, etc....wouldn't affect me much. Major repairs though....I hear those can be real killers with Bimmers. Doesn't matter much right now...my lease eliminates that possibility.

I'm still flabbergasted at how quickly Cinci got his car! It was literally unloaded, ferried, processed, and shipped to Cincinnati in just 3 days! Cinci....are you SURE you were on the Don Juan??? Not even our NY drop or Atlanta shipments have found their way home yet!

service history

no idea on the long term costs, but I did collect data on my previous car, a 1998 Honda Civic DX Hatchback, 5-speed.

After the warranty expired, I spent anywhere from $150 to $2000 a year on maintenance and repairs. On average, I spent about $500 a year. I maintained the car by the book at the dealer, and was a picky owner so I had some things fixed that many people driving inexpensive cars like this one would not fix. But overall I'd say it was slightly higher than average since I took good care of my car. When I sold it it was in excellent condition and sold in 2 days! I had 84,500 miles on it when I sold it.

For a 3 series, I would expect to spend twice as much on maintenance as on a small Japanese economy car, so figure $1000-1500 a year, on average, after the warranty period is over.

That's taking it to the dealer. After the warranty period is over, I may try to find a good independent shop in my area that specializes in BMWs, thinking that may reduce the cost somewhat. But I would still use BMW parts, and the dealer is VERY convenient. I am pretty busy most of the time so I like being able to take it in at night vs. having to deal with repairs during normal business hours.

Nice thing is I'm putting 50% down and plan to pay off the rest in about 1.5 years so when the time comes for expensive repairs I'll have room for that in my budget. It just goes with the territory.

Regarding how fast my car was delivered... all I know is that my SA told me that his cars typically take 3-5 days to show up once off the boat. He also bumped the car to "Priority 1" (or something like that). I'm assuming the priority number is the cause of the quick delivery. Does anyone know what that value means in the whole scheme of the delivery process? Does anyone else know what their priority number is? I'm glad to be in the position I'm in, but I'm curious how the system works.

Priority 1 is the designation for a sold car, or specifically one that was ordered for a customer and not for dealer stock.. Thus every car connected to this thread would be considered a "Priority1!" car. You must just be blessed by the Gods in relation to geography and how fast your car arrived. You have my hearty congrats.. and a hope that mine shows up sooner that the predicted Thurs. Being someone like Fletcher969 who does 90% of his own car maintenance post warranty, my experience is that how many problems etc you have is related to how well you in fact maintain the car. I keep a notebook on all vehicles, always use synthetic oil etc. My truck is an 02 with 142,000 miles and I will drive it to 300,000 before its retired. My youngest son drives his moms old 97 Explorer and its approaching 200,000 and runs like the day we brought it home. If you can get this type of service from domestic vehicles you should be able to get even more from a BMW. Front engine rear wheel drive vehicles are much less difficult to work on as accesory drives and water pumps etc are not shoved against the fender well.. The electronics get constantly more complex, but most maintenace items can be handled in house with a little homework..

Priority-1 are customer sold cars. They also apply to ED cars.

I believe Priority-3 cars are for dealer's stock i.e. unsold orders.

Having said that, my car was shipped with Priority-9 Peformance Ctr Delivery ... as I had cancelled that mid-voyage and DC not being in the main pipeline of cars arriving at SC, I am keeping my fingers crossed as to when I actually take delivery

CA called me first thing in the morning ... the car's here, going through prep...

You guys should be getting your calls soon ...

Unfortunately, I have to go on a business trip until Wednesday

Scheduled a Saturday morning (10:00EST) delivery instead ... it'll make for an awesome weekend me thinks Weather reports calls for partly cloudy skies and a high of 71F

That'll give them time to install the OEM alarm. The dealer said nay on the wheel exchange/upgrade though ...

Will post pics as soon as I can ....

Good luck to the rest of the shipmates ... wishing you a fast and perfect delivery ... don't forget the pics.

Cheers,

Mr. K!!

shipmates b311lee & fletcher: Thank you guys ... I couldn't believe it either, but the CA said that the car was being prepped this morning ... sucks I have to go away until Wednesday... Saturday morning should work out to be the best time to take delivery

I am pretty sure you guys will get calls either today or tomorrow. By right my car shouldn't be here yet, coming from a priority-9 turnaround and DC not being on the main transport line for ex Germany/SA incoming cars. My guess would be that it managed to find a space on DC-bound trucks filled with Z4s and X5s I've had many surprises (relative to other posters' experience) on this order e.g. short 2 days wait at Bremerhaven and relatively short 6 days from port to dealership lot (can't beat cinci330 though) ... can't complain.

What freebies are you guys shooting for??
