Steering wheel is peeling - anyone else?

Just noticed on my 2008 with under 30K miles my steering wheel is starting to peel next to the volume control buttons. The finish is flaking off. I have never picked at it or had this problem on my 330 with over 60K miles on it. My 135 is still under warranty and I plan on having it looked at (and hopefully replaced) when I go in for my next service.

Anyone else have this issue? If so, did you get it covered under warranty?

I had this problem show up on both my 135 and on my X5 just recently. Warranty did cover it. Service tech told me it is common especially on the X5 and as a result had X5 covers in stock. Dealership did have to order covers in for the M wheel on the 135. You should be fully covered on this one.

Sweet - that's good that it's covered, bad that it's happened to so many.

Happened to my wife's e90. Also happened on similar surfaces on the door grab handles. Dealer replaced all the parts under warranty.

Hmm, the same thing is happening on my cover. I thought about just wrapping it in CF (Di-Noc or cloth).

They first said it was wear item, then covered both vehicles...

Had mine replaced today with absolutely no problems or questions and I have almost 45k miles on my car. I had this and other threads printed out and ready to go, but didn't need them at all

My 2008 is peeling on one side and bubbling on the other. When I broght it in, and my SA called he said they evaluate on a case by case basis and that mine was not covered, but that he would talk to the guy to understand why and push for the replacement. I told him to either peel the rest off or replace it. I am waiting for a call back. Rediculous. They know it's an issue, yet they don't own up to it. I had an E90 for 3 years and did not have this problem.

My God... what are you doing? Gnawing on your steering wheel when you get bored?

I had problems like this with the same material on my Golf. So far 2 years on no problems in my one. From what I was looking at, I'm wondering if what you use to clean the interior is causing this stuff to peel. In my golf I used various Armorall like sprays, In the BMW I only use the Interior cleaner from the parts department. So far the plastics seem to be in great shape, where as by now my golf was peeling.

What are the folks having trouble using to clean their interiors?

I haven't used anything on that part of the steering wheel. I'll get it replaced when I go in for the 30K service.
