biggest dislike about the 1-series?

I have a 2011 128i, and I love the car a lot. I also have the 328i (sedan + coupe), and I find that the nimbleness of the 1 series is awesome in comparison. Of course there are things I like more on the 3 than I do on the 1 (eg. getting the seatbelt in the 1 series is a bigger pain than the 3 coupe.

Now the biggest dislike I have about the 1 series so far is:

the factory brakes, the brake dust... I washed the car yesterday, and today... it's all gray again... It's so bad that it even gets on the door panels...

what are your biggest dislike about the 1?

Honestly, I have a 128i too and I agree with the brake dust. The brakes are pretty good though, quite sharp.

Ya I wipe down the wheels a lot after I was it because every time I get home at the end of the day they look dirty... I think meguiars makes a wheel soap that keeps brake dust away... I haven't tried it yet..

Nothing prevents brake dust accumulation on both MINI and E82. Don't waste your money unless you buy a good brush to clean your wheels when you wash your car. Biggest dislike for me is the smallish gas tank.

Understeer in the vert is terrible. Cars with less than half the power seem to be able to take corners faster. Quite embarrassing for one and also makes you feel as if you're driving something good for straight lines only, which takes away a large part of the enjoyment of driving.

Find a good wheel wax/sealant. It will help a lot.

The only thing I dislike about my 1 is that I love it too much that I'm having trouble deciding what to do with it. I don't want to mess it up!

I changed my brake pads to Cool Carbons. It cost some money, but I consider it a bargain compared to spending half my life cleaning brake dust.

Blew out a runflat on a NYC pothole already, after 5 months of owing it. The stiff, short sidewall runflats on a M-Sports 135 are the worst ones I driven.

1) Roofline is a bit too tophat style--should smooth it out ala 3 series; 2) rear end squat affect, should also smooth those lines; 3) understeer, not terribly bad. Other than that is a small, torquey monster...

They are excellent. But besides less dust, they also have much less initial bite than stock. Look in the suspension and brakes forum. There are a few threads about brake pads with vendors.

But but but, you can't blow out a RFT At least that's what our dealer told my wife when she had it happen to her 3 (about the same time frame as you too). We used it as an excuse to replace those abominations with real tires.

The only thing I dislike that is specific to the 1 (e.g. RFTs are common to most of the line) is the lack of a good handle on the inside of the door. The grab handle is too far forward and it doesn't have a little pocket on the arm rest. On my first test drive the wind unexpectedly caught the door and the only thing that saved the car next to me was that the last test driver parked really bad so the door couldn't reach it. Sitting back, I couldn't reach the grab handle and I instinctively grabbed at the armrest to find nothing...

Won't keep me from buying it though.

Windows control on the door, wtf... I'm still not used to it and don't approve the design decision/change.
Small gas tank, I don't know if it's how I drive but it definitively feels smaller than the E36. Made a 700km trip and had to fill twice because I filled too soon the first time. Right before arriving at destination, I saw a sign saying 70km before next fuel station, had 50km left on the computer...
54 Payments left for it to really be mine

These would be my top three as well, and I would add a fourth: underpowered A/C. Brakes themselves are awesome though, incredible stopping power compared with my 06 330. Also, the orange reflectors on the headlights are ugly. But these are all pretty minor.

1. Totally agree on the door handle!! This is my 4th BMW, and all of them have had a "cup" in the door handle behind the window control. Annoying.

2. Stereo. Even the upgraded one sucks. But expected with BMW at this point. I wrote a letter to them after I got my 335 sedan I was so appalled. Almost got an Acura for the ELS system alone. But then I drove it and it sucked.

3. Lack of storage. Kind of annoyed to lose the seatback storage that I've had in all the other BMWs.
