Wait, if he went from 2x 2.5" to a single 3.5" isn't he constricting the system? The area of a circle is calculated pi r^2, which for the original 2x2.5" comes out to about 9.8 in sq (2x [1.25^2]*pi) whereas the single 3.5" pipe yields 9.6 in sq area (1x [1.75^2]*pi). He's definitely saving on weight since the circumference of the 3.5" pipe is 11" vs 15.7" on the 2x2.5" stock pipes. Are the stock pipes really that large though?
I wonder if there aren't flow improvements with the single pipe vs the dual. Less surface area to drag the moving gases but thats a physics problem out of my ken. Pipe with diameter larger than 3.55" will yield a net increase in volume so 3.5" is a little smaller than stock.

after a certain point in the system you don't need as much. 3.5" is more than enough with room to spare

The good news is in the weight savings. By going from 2x2.5 to 1x3.5 he removes about 30% of the weight, holding all else constant.
