Pocono tri-oval. Which car to take?

So I signed up with the Audi Club for a one day track event in May at Pocono. The last time I was there, with PDA, we ran part of the track and the infield. Well, I just learned that we are running the entire tri oval, and only that. Now I am thinking of taking the S4 (340 hp, stock suspension, tiptronic) instead of the nimble but lowly 128 (230 hp, coilovers, manual) anyone have any thoughts or advice?
Much appreciated!

I did this in my 135i and hit 203 mph on a "find your top speed" day. It was awesome. A dyno soon after the trip showed I was making 461 rwhp, 501 ft-lb. If I didn't have to slow down around the two tighter corners I think I could have hit around 209 which I think is the maximum speed I can with the 3.06 rear differential.

It was very scary though. Very very scary.

you must have the fastet 135 in the world. I really like to hear more about this. kind of hard to believe our cars can aerodynamically/mechanically break the 200 mph barrier. how much boost are you running and any supporting mods to support the monster output of your tune?

I doubt it. There was a guy with a 335i with upgraded turbos that was accelerating faster than me. Anyway, I was running 19 psi tapering to 15.5 psi at redline. JB4 with 15 ohm mod and with SLD, meth, downpipes, dci. But the key was simulating 5th gear while in 6th gear since the JB4 won't signal for additional meth in 6th gear normally. I was also running race gas.

Besides performance mods I have KW V2s that were set low and M3 front suspension parts.

Go try it out yourself on your local Nascar track. I used my iPhone 3GS and the SpeedBox app. The iPhone 3GS GPS kind of sucks, but I'd be surprised if it were off by more than 1-2%. Pocono raceway has this kind of thing fairly often so next time they do I'll bring my new GoPro Hero 2 and record it.

that's interesting. can you post a screen shot from your iphone app showing your speed? on my local track with a half mile front straight I was hitting 140 mph in 5th gear @6k rpm. I can't understand how 6th gear can put down another 60 mph

Not sure how to take one and it probably would have been really dangerous to do that anyway. I'll video it next time.

http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/tyres.html

Figures for 135i (manual):
1- 4.06
2- 2.40
3- 1.58
4- 1.19
5- 2.0
6- 0.86
R- 3.68

FD- 3.08
Tire Size: 255/40R18
Rev limit: 7000

Interestingly, the max in 6th gear is 204 mph but it looked like I still had around 400 RPM left so either the tach or my GPS was off by a little bit. Either way, the difference between 199 and 203 mph (2% off) is very small.

Here's a video of the E90 M3 hitting 211 mph:

And that has a larger frontal cross section and similar drag coefficient compared to the 135i.

I was at Pocono once and hit 150 mph at the backstraight with no power mods. It was kind of scary. Did you say you hit over 200 mph with 135i?
Did you deploy parachute at the and of the straight to slow down?

My iPhone indicated it was slightly over 200 but now looking at the gearing calculator I suspect something might have been off. But no, no parachute. It took 3 or 4 laps to get the confidence to keep going faster around until my iPhone showed over 200 and then I slowed down to around 100 for the corner and just coasted to cool my brakes.

FD on manual is 3.06. sorry that's not a M3 but a M5 with SMG 7 speed gearbox. the thing about these claims are, if you can't prove it, might as well not claim it.

I thought I've read somewhere on this forum that our cars are gear for a top speed of like 178....

That's definitely not true... there are plenty of people with stock 135i's that hit 181 with the limiter removed. This guy is doing 190 in his tuned 335i according to his iDrive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=1FRJRVLkf7Q
Same transmission and differential as the 135i.

181 is not far from 178. the leap from 180 to 200 is monumental my friend. btw, your HP figures are crank not wheel

I don't remember where I found this, probably on this forum. It's definitely 135i or I wouldn't have kept the filename. 255 tires would make slightly higher theoretical numbers. I would have guessed our cars weren't slippery enough to reach max theoretical speed.

Gary, theoretical means nothing and yes our cars are like a piece of brick slicing through the air. this is a fun topic of discussion but honestly if you can't prove your claim then you shouldn't claim it and I haven't seen anyone post any proof our cars have hit 190. I am pretty sure if someone had done it by now would be all over this forum and youtube

Why are my HP figures crank? It was measured on a dynojet without correction.

Terry from BMS got this graph when he dynoed:
http://www.n54tech.com/forums/attach...1&d=1313193778

That's 430 RWHP, 492 RWTQ. He didn't use a full exhaust, just downpipes + FMIC + DCI. I don't know what to tell you but I'm not starting threads posting my speeds and what not. Just suggesting the OP takes his fastest car to the oval. And when I go back I will record it and post it on YouTube.

I may be wrong about your hp figures but it seems you're pushing close to 500 at the crank. I guess with meth anything is possible. look forward to videos! that would be great

Would you guys say suspension is more important than power?

IMO yes. Even though I'm an American, I think turning is a lot more fun than accelerating.

i'm calling shenanigans on getting anywhere near 200 on pocono. you'd be on pace to beat the nascar track record, which is barely over 170mph average.
