Oil temp gauge is 128i

New guy here with a question - I didn't see it in a search unless my search skills need help...

Can the oil temp gauge cluster (actually the whole instrument cluster) from a 135i be swapped into a 128? I would assume the sensor is there, just wondering if anyone has looked into it or done it. I imagine some ECU fiddling would be necessary.

Thanks

If the sensor is there, you could create a virtual gauge in Torque or a similar program. I don't remember seeing it but my memory isn't perfect. There is also a device that puts a gauge in place of part of one of your vents on the dash. Either an app for your phone or an additional gauge would be a lot cheaper than swapping the instrument cluster.

I was hoping to be able to tell you an OBD-II gauge (like UltraGauge) would work... but they don't list Oil Temp as being available on their site:

http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/TEN/gauges.htm

... and then I found this:

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=540223

So ultimately I am of no help. * sigh * My ex-wife would agree :O/

Yeah, I wish it would display oil temp, but at least it displays coolant temp which is better than what the instrument cluster displays, which is nothing.

The 135i dash will work, it might require some coding but it will work.

Do you know this for a fact? I ask because I talked to a service guy at a dealer (after I started this post) and he said the oil temp sensor in the 128 wasn't there for use. He might be wrong of course...

Thanks

any updates op?

I may need to do an instrument cluster replacement at some point, would like to get that oil temp guage the 135i has. I just need to know if the sensor is there on our cars

I think Stig has an electronic Performance steering wheel on his 128i - maybe ask him if he can pull up engine temp on it?

As much as I would like to have an oil temp gauge, I went ahead and got the P3 cars vent display. It does not display oil temp but water/coolant temp instead (which is still useful information). Someone told me the 128i does not get a reading (that can be used for display purposes) for oil temp but I don't think that is true.

Having the display for the coolant temp now it is interesting to see how the water pump and thermostat behave. Coolant temp is constantly fluctuating - up, down or staying constant. Not like a traditional WP and T stat at all but completely normal for these cars. It is really based on the demand of the engine under varying conditions.

Chris, If you do swap in a 135 cluster and it works let us know!

The reason you can't get the oil temperature on the 128i is there is no sensor. I don't know where the sensor is on the 135i but you might get an idea from RealOEM. The wiring harness may already contain the wiring to hook it up. If you are lucky, it would just be a matter of screwing in the sensor. But it could also be that the car would not recognize the sensor even if it is hooked into the harness. It depends on the programming.

Thanks all, TheSt|G how did you get your oil temp or coolant temp reading to work with your BMWP V2 steering wheel?

I have the V1 wheel, but I doubt the situation is any different for the V2 wheel. The car already has the sensors in place for oil temp to the degree, coolant temp to the degree, accelerometers for G-Force detection, and a whole other host of things. The V1/2 electronic wheels simply tap into the harness and display that information:

(screen looks dim/spotty because like most screens, the refresh rate goes crazy with cameras)

Thank you! Sorry didn't know if you had the V1 or V2 wheel.

Okay, this is very good news

You guys are silly. Of course the 128i has an oil temp sensor. All cars have them nowadays. It's a hugely important piece of monitoring equipment.

Seeing the temp is just a matter of hacking up a gauge and getting it to read the value on way or another.

Buy a used 135i cluster.

You need to disassemble the cluster, remove the dials and gauges, desolder the eeprom and write your VIN number to it. You will need a new M35080 eeprom if the milage from your donor cluster is higher than your vehicle milage. The M35080 chip only accept odometer writes that are greater than the existing odometer reading to stop people from turning back the clock. New chips are on ebay for $3.

You will then need to re calibrate the dial needles, then code the cluster.

I have done this twice for people who wanted to fit an M3 cluster into a 335i

You can install a 135i cluster and just have someone code it for you, sometimes they work without coding.

Not coding is a hack install imo. Cant code unless the vin matches. Will get tamper dot if theres a mismatch

Just search for "tamper dot" and there's plenty of posts. Ncs expert throws a hissy fit and won't allow you to code the cluster when there's a vin mismatch trust me

All good info! Just for the record, I didn't say there wasn't any oil temp sensor - I was told that by a service guy at a dealer (which I found hard to believe).
