The future of 1M... Speculation welcome.

What do you guys think will be the future of the 1M?

Can we look forward to future models with options like rag top, DCT, etc?
or will it just hold as a static special edition and go the way of the Z8?

Speculation welcome.

Well what I have heard points to there never being a 1M again, because.

For the 2013 model year the 1 series will share the FWD platform of the R60 MINI

The future variation of the current 1 series will become the 2 series and maybe there will be a 2M or M2.

So based on those assumptions, there will never be another 1M.

Agreed

This is it for the 1M in current shape no question and even if they do another 1M based on the next generation (get it JT Kirk?), it will be sufficiently different for this model to stand alone.

As said before, I can't remember the last time BMW made an ///M so obtainable (cost) yet unobtainable (production numbers).

A sure fire classic and cult car in the making.

(Of course I've bought it to hoon about in but the residual values are a nice bonus).

"They" keep saying about the last NA V8 M engine in the M3, well what about the last 3.0L I6 in a compact form?

I don't particularly want a 4 cyl engine, could have had a Golf R for that.

1M fits the bill perfectly. Its all I need/want in a car.

This is what BMW has been hinting about for some time now. The 1M will ultimately be one of the lowest production cars BMW has ever made and pave the way towards Turbo M's in the future.

I think a lot depends on how well they sell.

If they fly out of the dealerships like hotcakes I can't see BMW just ignoring a cash cow.

Either way, it's a special car. Kind of wish I had waited instead of getting my 135. Oh well.

One big Hint that the BMW the 1M is a one year car only is that they are being sold as 2011 cars, yet all other 1 series cars on BMW NA web sites are being sold as 2012's. Some say this is because the 1M won't meet 2012 emissions?

I heard the same thing that the N54 will be for 2011 only, and that is why the cars are MY 2011 vehicles. My 1M has been produced, and is sitting waiting to be shipped according to the dealer.

Correct. I believe at one point the car was intended to be a 2012 model, it even contains the LCI changes found on the 2012 135i...however, the n54 does not meet emission standards for next year, and to avoid fees regarding the matter, BMW decided to call it a 2011 model.

Limited numbers? BMW has left the door open to making more than first annouced by saying they will produce the car through December 2011.

That being said, it seems all 1M's are spoken for already. I have called several dealerships in my area with no luck. They tell me to call around, but all are not even accepting deposits. Their quota is tapped. This could change with a second production run through end of December 2011?

One dealer told me he had a memo stating that BMW would make a decision to produce more 1M's by end of July 2011.

this is just me being selfish, buuuuuuuuut

I hope they only make it for this year and discontinue production.

Making it just that much more special and giving that true potential as a classic.

But... I know in the back of my head that BMW is sure to see the huge demand/desire for this car... after all it is a business

For this current 1M I think nothing will be new other than performance parts and maybe, maybe a cabrio. I think something that may happen with the current 1M would be a second production year run

+1, BMW has a great lease special(2yr) with low monthly payments but the residual is 60%. That usually indicates good resale.

Also offering 3.9% financing on 1M's.

I'd be surprised if there were many people leasing the 1M. That puppy is a keeper.

My guess is that BMW will have too much success with the 1M to not make it for another year or 2. they have had problems with getting their special editions in the past (CSL e46 etc ) sold. the way they have targeted the 1M and the pricing and usability and popularity will probably be the only way it will be produced longer and in greater numbers. the hype around the 1M already has proven that they shouldn't limit this car to very small amounts and take it on for another year or 2. the fact that they are "LIMITING Production" on a entry level M is suspect and i Think that they may have did this to build anticipation and desirability to contribute to the 1M success right out of the gate. but i dont know anything. i wouldnt be surprised if they build another model year 1M and add another color god willing Monte carlo blue

So is the Z4 sDrive 35iS going away too? It has the same engine.

Is the 335iS an N54 also?

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream.

BMW is a German car manufacturer and is about to release the new 1er in Europe, first with hatchback versions. There is no way that we will see an extended production for 1M or 1 coupe in general. The max that they can continue the production seems to be the first half of 2012 and even that is a question mark. They could increase the production capacity during this time frame though.

the fact that it is an entry level M car and its limited production and doesnt costs even half of a csl or gts is suspect and i think they will produce more than originally anticipated. if it was going to be that rare they would probably ask at least 60-65 and have some production number printed on the interior like all the special editions

I'm fairly certain that they're not individually numbered - they all say "1 of 450" (all 450 of them)
