2012 135i Build Thread

The plan is for this vehicle is be both a daily driver and track car. 40/60 daily/track bias I would say. Over the next 3-4 years, the car will evolve into a dedicated track car.

Goals

Performance: maintaining factory warranty a priority (at this time).
  • Cooling: fight limp mode. additional radiators, water/coolant ratio, bigger fan, speed holes?
  • Suspension: fix rear end shimmy. fix understeer. lighter wheels, non-rft tires
  • Brakes: prevent overheat. pads, fluid, ti shims, RB upgrades vs bbk?

Cosmetic: oem+. subtle aggression.
  • Lower the ride height
  • De-///M badge wherever possible: steering wheel, door sills, wheels
  • CF. The key word is tasteful

This thread is taking on a disorganzied blog style which was not my intent, so I'm going to attempt to change that. Let's begin with stating my intentions for the car.

26/07/12
After a long 9 weeks, my car has finally found its way home from Geneva. Before that wonderful day at the Welt where I first laid eyes on her, it had been 7 months since initially trying to place the order. So, you can imagine that between the long waits and these forums I had a collection of mods piled in the corner, taunting me nightly.

First cruise right after re-delivery. Still sporting Euro-spec dirt, bugs and brake dust

As well as shipping labels

Here she is after detailing by Kevin at GTA In Detail

Here are some of the mods that have been installed and others still waiting in the wings.

Special thanks to Dackleone for helping me source the blackline tails at BMW Niederlassung Muenchen while on my ED.

I'll update as further mods find their way home...

Spring is finally around the corner which means the time has almost come to take my car over to Rocco at RMP Motors so he can install all the mods I've accumulated over the winter.

Here's a taste of what's going on tomorrow

Any tips for picking up the blacklines in Munich? Had the same idea for my upcoming ED trip but no clue where to start. Won't be spending more than 1 day in Munich so likely will need to make plans in advance?

Coming from one of the one of the reigning kings of epic 1er builds, that is high praise

When checking in at the delivery lounge upstairs, I handed over the part # and asked the fellow who was processing the paperwork to call BMW Niederlassung Muenchen for me. He seemed a little skeptical (they had just been released at the time) but was happy to oblige. I picked them up first thing the next morning.

BMW Niederlassung München Filiale Nord
Riesenfeldstrasse 7
80809 München, Deutschland
089 353540

Dack had recommended trying

BMW Niederlassung München Hauptbetrieb
Frankfurter Ring 35
80807 Munich, Germany
089 353510

Keep in mind, they come in a fairly sizable box and are a little fragile making them somewhat cumbersome to lug around Europe. Just ask my wife. But they did fit in the overhead compartment!

Your going to love the European Delivery experience

Yep. Love how dynamic it is, changing colour depending on light source. Sometimes it looks almost as purple as Techno Violet and other times as pale as Estoril

Yep. Great fitment and durability. Took out a few cones on the skidpad at my last HPDE and this past winter it was a carbon fibre snow plow, but the lip has nary a scratch on it.

Perfect, thanks for the information. Would it be out of the question to have them installed on site? I.e. does the car have to ship to the US with bone-stock US specs.

Took the car out for its first decent drive since the suspension overhaul. Here are some quick first impressions:

- car feels flatter through corners
- the rear end doesn't squat any longer under hard acceleration
- steering feels somewhat tighter and more connected; combined with above gives the car a point-and-shoot effect
- shimmy over bumps is gone
- ride is more compliant; hit a couple bumps, potholes that had me instinctively grit my teeth at the sight of them but I rolled right over no problem - to what degree this can be attributed to the RS1's or PSS's, I cannot say
- dialed the compression back to 5 front, 6 rear and the difference was readily apparent from the 10f/12r setting on the initial ride home
- over road undulations the front felt a little bouncy at times; i need to tweak the compression settings
- slight rubbing is occurring i)in the rear, noticeably on outside rear tire when hitting dips/bumps during turns ii)in the front once over a large dip at highway speed
- i detect a knock or clunking in the rear when hitting bumps at low speed only

I'm going to take the car in for a 4 wheel alignment tomorrow at Altech Automotive to see where things are at and hopefully correct the rubbing. After that back to RMP to adjust ride height and take care of a couple nagging issues.

Quick cell phone pic, I'll post up better photos after a wash
