E82 professional radio to professional with HD

My e82 has a screen that fails to function when it is hot. I am looking at used head units and some from later years, like 2010+ have HD radio. I know Euro cars didn't have a lot of stuff pre wired, but I'm in the USA and am wondering if I buy a 2010+ head unit that had HD raido, if my car would then be able to have full functionality. I had some aftermarket stereos in other cars that had the Hzd tuner built into the unit vs. An external tuner. Wanted to see if anyone has been able to add it to a USA car by replacing the head unit.

I have searched and most threads end with inconclusive or contradictory info. Even found some threads that had completely incorrect info as some people make assumptions about USA cars vs. Euro.

Again, my car is a 2009 128i with Hifi. I do not have Harman kardon.

Garage List
2012 BMW 135i  [0.00]
1999 Lexus LS400  [0.00]
1985 BMW 325e  [0.00]
That's a good question.

I recall when these cars were new a colleague of mine purchased an early 2011 that was produced right before they changed the head unit over during 2010. He wanted satellite radio, but it would have required replacing the entire head unit and retrofitting other modules.

As far as HD radio, I'm really not sure. There are a series of modules mounted beneath the floor of the trunk just forward of the battery. I would take a look at the part diagrams for that area and see if there is a specific module, like the combox, that requires retrofit to enable to the feature you want.

Mystery solved.

I picked up a professional radio from a 2011 328i and it was satellite ready and HD radio built in. I installed it in my 2009 128i and it was plug and play. No coding, no trunk module replacement, just a simple removal and replacement. I also was able to confirm HD Radio is built into the head unit and has nothing to do with the module in the trunk. The whole install was about 10 mins and my stereo sounds better than ever.

To confirm, if you're looking to replace your e82 head unit for whatever reason (mine had a screen that failed in the heat), you can easily add HD radio to your car by just buying the newer model head unit. By the way, im in the USA so IDK how much this applies to global cars. I know there is a lot of misinformation out there, so hopefully this simplifies it a bit.

In my case, a few years ago my local dealer replaced the head unit. After that my 2008 135i plays HD radio well.
But I have a question. I heard new professional head unit supports native USB interface.

Did you see any differences, extra USB port?

I did not see a USB port. My car didn't have one to start, but there was nothing on the back of the new hd radio head unit

Hey Guod -

Do you remember the model or part number of that radio? Did the 328 donor car have any options, or maybe built in HD was standard by then...?

Trying to make the same jump with my 2008 135i, and want to make sure I get the right one.. Thanks!

I do not know the part number of head unit, I wish i did a better job at documenting it. Maybe this weekend i'll take it out and snap a pic.

But it was def by the time it was standard in the car. From 2010 and on, you should be okay. I THINK the head unit had a SIRIUS branded logo on the top of it.

If i had to guess, I think it's 65129270374. I found some pics on this site after looking up the OEM part number for a 2011 e90 head unit. http://www.laglobalparts.com/Catalog...M-A1&makeID=10

I also remember the bluetooth logo on it, but regret not pulling the bluetooth module from the car at the junkyard, but I didn't do it since my 09 is not pre wired....Sucks they removed the prewired stuff in 09 and had it in 08 and 10+.

Pleased to report success!

Purchased a used radio from BMW of Alexandria on line, here's their description:

Part Name: RADIO BMW PROFESSIONAL CD/IB:651010
Part Number: 65-12-9-241-762 (65129241762)
Radio BMW Professional CD/IBOC

However, the part number on the radio I received is 6512 9242505

Easy swap in for the original unit in my '08 135i droptop (no iDrive)

The only hiccups were deciding which of the 2 antenna ports to use (the other is for Sirius), and going into the radio menu to set the region to the US, which enabled the IBOC reception.

Now I have HD radio in my car, yay!

Thanks Guod!
