Thumbs down The dreaded "engine malfunction - reduced power" light

A little history:

I have a 2008 135i with MT

This January, I fueled up, hit the highway, and about 2 hours in, I got the "engine malfunction - reduced power" light and the car went into limp mode. I hit the SOS button, and they told me to shut the car off for 20 mins, and restart and hopefully the light would go away and I could drive normally again - which worked. After the first incident, the car has experienced long cranks and rough idles galor - but no light came back.

The first time the light came on, I had it checked about a month after (was out of the country, or else would have done it sooner), and they couldn't get the fault codes to come up again, and didn't do any repair. 2 weeks ago, I had them look at it again, and they reprogrammed the computer due to a certain fault, but still no fault showed up that warranted the need for a new HPFP.

Today, I started the car after having been idle for the past 3 days in garage. Immediately, I was greeted by the "engine malfunction - reduced power" light. I drove down the street and back, parked it, and restarted again 30 mins later - light disappeared and engine run well again.

Called the service center and was informed the earliest it could be seen is Sept 16, and not until Sept 22 if I wanted a loaner. My question is: should I be driving it between now and then? Does it need to be sooner? If I continue to drive between now and then do I run the risk of the computer codes/history being erased and the service center not being able to pull them and find the fault code from today? I want to make sure this gets taken care of once and for all and that darn HPFP finally gets replaced like it should! :-D

Mine did this on the way home from buying it. It really sucked because it was on a saturday. I took it to the dealer on monday and it turned out the poblem was the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP). Hope this helps.

I just BT scanned my car. Came up with 29D2, 29D1, 29D0, 29CC which are are mis-fire codes....Mike at N54 tuning told me I gotta take it to the stealer to get new plugs/injectors/fuel pump possibly. Still gotta take that JB3 out!

Hmm, mine's been throwing a 29D1 code, but it only happens with the JB3 on Map 3. If I remove the JB3 altogether or set it to Map 0, I never get any codes or power loss.

hmmm you should email mike at n54 tuning....i feel like it has more to do with something in the car already being faulty and throwing the JB3 into the mix doesnt create the problem just kind of pecks away at it

I agree. I'm fairly certain the problem is there without the JB3, but it only manifests itself WITH the JB3. If I can't get it to fail in Map 0, how can I dealer the car? That's my dilemma.

I guess I could let the codes build up in Map 3 then uninstall the JB3 without clearing the codes and then dealer it, but how risky is that? The techs won't be able to duplicate the issue and I'll be right back where I started.

I just left the codes, going to uninstall the JB3 and take it in. Mike at n54 said that they were just misfiring codes and didnt have anything to do with JB3

Had some rough starts the past two weeks. Car starts, Revs up to 2k RPM, and then the rpm band dips til the car shakes violently and feels like its stalling....then today the dreaded light came on while on Edens (94). I has just shifted from 1-2nd gear and was accelerating and heard the BONG and saw the light. I pulled over turnned car off and restarted it. Appointment tomorrow at Laurel BMW of Westmont. will prob be my 3rd HPFP replaced since Oct 08. 6th time car has been in for engine problems.

I called Bmw corporate and added to my claim from April '10 over engine troubles. I hope they give me a better explanation than last time "Well, it's a machine Sir, things will go wrong" to which I replied, "No, it's the ultimate driving machine...not the Ultimate in the shop machine."

it might not have anything to do with the hpfp actually. Mine actually has to do with the injectors. And mine was acting EXACTLY the same as your description. Cross your fingers and maybe it wont be your hpfp either! = ]

Did BMW determine your problem is actually bad injectors?

MUFCe82 - is your car working OK now? How many days in shop? I have 29K miles on my 2008 135i MT and had the same trouble tonight (for the first time) when I was driving about 50 and "limped" the last 5 miles home. Curious because we use the same dealer and I'll be going there tomorrow.

Mine is fine now, 30k miles. total time in shop for two years of ownership, about 2o days.
Laurel BMW has been great about the issue. Now there is a full on recall for the HPFP, check your mail, you shoudl see it soon.

What worked for me was upgrading the firmware on the JB3 to the latest one. I was getting engine malf codes everyday. Took out the JB3 and brought to bmw and said they found nothing. When I got it back, I upgraded firmware and haven't gotten a malf light in the past week.

Where you getting those codes only at cold start?
What was your fix?
I'm getting same codes repeatedly every time I cold start in cold weather.
