BMW performance kit

Has anyone installed the basic BMW Performance kit on a 2012 135i? I know they work on the 2011 but seeing is how the 2012 is a slightly different configuration I was wondering what the results would be. A mechanic at the dealer recommended waiting awhile to see how it perfoms with the new set up.

Just asking.

You probably want to move this out of the 1M forum if you're hoping for 135i owners to respond

What do you mean "basic BMW Performance kit"? Do you mean bmw's tune (+20 PS) for the engine? PPK1 and PPK2. (Power Performance Kit).

I apologize for posting this in the wrong forum. I was doing it on an iPad and guess I was not paying attention to the forum I was in. I will pay more attention.

All I know is that it is labeled "BMW Performance Power Kit", $935, Part #11122219489. Supposed to boast HP to 320. I did not see "PPK1" or "PPK2" but I would guess it is PPK1 because no other modifications are required like a stronger suspension.

Yes, that is the PPK1.

You might check with Jason @Tischer (www.getbmwparts.com) or United BMW (http://www.unitedbmwonline.com/) for the current discounted price. At one time the PPK1 was selling for $600 plus coding from your local dealer. I think now its closer to $800 or $1000 plus coding.

When you buy the PPK1 mail order (thru Dan or Jason) they give you an access code that your local dealer can activate thru the BMW mother pc at the dealership. Most dealers will charge one or two hours labor for the "download" coding. G.L.

Thank you for the links. My dealer would give me a 10% discount. They mentioned that due to the engine configuration being different than the 2011 that it would be wiser to wait until results have been compiled.

What is so different from an 2011 to an 2012 N55? Its the same engine isn't it? Same engine code.

I believe the only major change is the style of Turbo. I believe the 2011 had a duel Turbo and the 2012 has a single turbo. I am not knowledgeable enough to know what impact this has on the engine. The service guy just said that he would recommend I wait 6 to 8 months and see how things go. Being new to all this I though I would go along with his recommendation and see what the users, like you, would say about the subject.

I don't believe there was any change.. Although it's been hard to look at mods since most sites haven't updated and 2012s aren't in their list yet.

ALL N55's have a single dual scroll turbo(inlet). IF bmw had changed the engine they would have changed the engine code. Its still a N55 so its the same engine.

As I mentioned I am truly a novice. I thought the N54 had a Double Turbo and the N55 had a Single Turbo. I think the in-line 6, type of direct fuel injection... are the same with the N54 and N55 engines.

Yes, that is correct.

'08 thru '10's were N54 twin turbos(2).
'11 thru '12's are N55 dual scroll turbo(1 turbo with two intake inlets).

BMW offers a PPK1 and PPK2 kit for your 2012. Just look here.

BMW used the twin turbo N54 thru 2010 in 135's. In 2011 they went with the N55 single 'twin scroll' turbo. I havent heard any differences in the engines computer(DME) in the N55 runs of 2011-12. Its possible though, the N54 early models have a different DME than later N54's and the early versions need to be replaced with the newer version DME to work with the PPK. As I said though, I havent heard of any DME changes in N55 cars.

Quit a bit of useful information has been provided. Thank you for your comments. I will have to give some serious consideration on whether or not to install PPK1 upon delivery or wait 6~8 months as recommended by the service rep. Decisions, decisions!

I had mine installed on delivery, and yes, there is a difference that can be heard and felt in everyday driving. Nice exhaust burble, and an increase in highway passing power... I believe that BMW claims around .5 second quicker from 50 to 70. It's a shame they increased the price.

Your comment has sealed the deal and I will have them install the PPK1 upon delivery. Thank you for your comment.

I assume you have standard exhaust? I have 08' with BMW perf exhaust wondering if the sound would increase for mine as well?

Yes I have the standard exhaust. Of course I can just imagine this is the case as I will not receive delivery for, at least, another 6~7 weeks. I am just participating in these discussions in order to thoroughly understand what I am getting. I plan on taking very good car of this car.

Yes, I have a standard exhaust... while it is a little bit louder, what is more interesting is the burble on overrun, i.e. it is the quality of the sound more than the increase in volume.

Although I am gaining much knowledge about my new vehicle it is difficult reading and commenting without being able to get out on the road and experience. Oh well that is life. I am certain the wait will be well worth it. I have been listening to many sound clips and enjoy all of them.

I also have the PPK1, there is a slight increase in power but I believe the real treat lies in the throttle response.
