The problem there was that I couldn't see my monitor well enough to notice the details essential to the solution. The room was too bright with too much glare on the screen. When I read the hint that mentioned a crucial element, I had too look very hard to see what I had been missing.

This game requires attention to very subtle detail, and is apparently best played in a dark room.

Don't give up. Just take into account everything you have on the screen, what it does, and what you need to do to finish. Very rewarding.
