latest 335i news from Roundel

In the latest Roundel, Bob Roemer (aka: purveyor of all things wonderful in the BMW crystal ball), reports the testing of the 335i in Death Valley, and that "Sources tip that an announcement about the 335i being offered in this [USA] market will be made in the near future."

It appears that all of our extensive lobbying, letter writing, & dealer-pestering is about to pay off. Thanks to all of you that have worked so arduously to convince BMW NA of the grand wisdom of this marketing decision. There is a heaven after all!

I for one am glad I put money down. Hoping for a delivery about this time next year...

wait would this mean they would forego the 325 and make the 330 the base model?

I've predicted this before and will predict it again:

- The 335 will replace the 330.

- The 330 will have it's current standard equipment will be stripped and it will drop to the 325's pricing.

- The 325 will be dropped.

This will coincide with the release of the coupes, though the coupes might get the bumped engines for a few months while 325/330 sedan inventories are wound down.

Or maybe we'll have a

323i (Canada), 325i, 330i, AND 335i?

Perhaps BMW has decided to give us North Americans more than 2 sedan models to choose from? After all, our friends in Europe have dozens of sedan choices. Why can't we have one more choice?

don't drop the 325

They better not drop the 325 or i'll be  . Besides, I think having 3 choices would be good.

I hope they don't drop the 325, but how much of a diff will there be between the 330 and 335, then u have to consider the price diff between the 330 and 525, BMW needs to keep the 215 inline 6 or they are gonna price themselves out of the market, but woooo weee a 535 with all that power, and a 335, anyone know what the final HP will be, a 330 has 255, so do u think about 280-295 for the 335......I hope it aint a turbo....audi does all the tricks...bimmer just builds automobiles....turbos suck....nothing beats displacement.....Jedi

It will be a "dual-stage" turbo system...

They use this becuase it cuts wayy down on the turbo lag.

I don't remember the E46 325/330 models having 100 hp more than the outgoing ones. If you think that the anticipated 335 will replace the 330 for around the same price, then you're dreaming.

Of course, I hope you're right, because then I'll be the first to dump my 330 on some unsuspecting buyer the moment I can order a 335!

I agree, the 100hp increase would be too much. And plus I dont think the people who bought the 325i or 330i would be very happy. However wouldn't it be more possible on the coupes though, since the coupes are a little more expensive. And also perhaps becuase they wanted to make the coupes more sporty they would give it more power to differentiate it from the sedans

I doubt BMW would be spending serious R&D money to cannibalize one of their current models ... IMO, the 335 will simply be a new model, priced ~$9K above the 330i.

This seems more likely to me, and ditto the coupe comment.

Perhaps BMW is looking at the MB strategy of having several AMG tiers for each product, rather than the one M model that BMW typically has (forget things like CSL for the moment). Maybe they want a broader spread of models considered to be "high performance" or in BM's case, that would be "higher performance"

Perhaps the engine was already in development for the M3, then they decided to put a V8 in because of Audi and MB, so they had this "surplus" engine development that would be a waste not to use in a model.

I guess only time will tell on this one...

it would be a very bad move from bmw if they remove the 325 for the sake of the faithful customers and mates of ours that have bought the 325.

Look at the Audi formula:

A4 2.0 T--solid entry level (but a 4 cylinder)
A4 3.2--a premium 6 (but not stick)
S4 V8--but $50 G
RS4

BMW will compete against these 4 with

325i--solid entry with a straight 6 (head to head with A4 2.0T 4 cyl)
330i--premium to take on the A4 3.2 with stick
335i--entry "over the top" performance to take on the S4 (ST 6 turbo vs V8)
M3--a real RS 4 beater

The 3 series is the bread and butter to BMW. They want more bread and more butter--its that simple.

You're crazy if you think that BMW will just drop the price of the 330 and suddenly strip it of all of its standard features. When has that ever happened with any other model?
