You can's argue that the $$$/performance ratio always makes the 135 look like a bargain.

Pricing has a lot to do with the decision... the 911 is awesome, but out of the reach of too many people. From reading Drive articles throughout the year, it's no surprise they chose the 135i as best performance > 60K

Given the fact that 13 cars "won" I see little merit in the award. Stll, I guess BMW can always use another paperweight!

What's dissapointing is that the A3 beat the 1 in the vert category...pfffft. Saw it last night at Audi's Canberra new Showroom Official opening.... joking (mind you the R8 is still a hot car).

Fully agree with Drive's decision if value for money was a criterion. However, the category is for performance cars > $60K, and there is a lot of exotic metal out there from $60K to $infinity...

Last year DCOY was the M3, this year in the end the four finalist with a chance were the: A4, 135, Jag XF and the Accord. How the accord won? They say that one of the reasons is that its 6 cilinders can be automatically be turn off and use 4 or even 3 so save fuel, but still when you see how much it consumes (over 10l/100k) does not seem too economical. So for me and I bet most of the people ti should have been the 135 or even the Jag, last year was the M3, so if money was not an issue, how come the Porsche did not win?

It's good that the 135 is considered when making short lists of performance cars. Winning isn't all that important. There are always lots of subjective criteria. And certainly those driving 2001 Civics will have lots of comments on the outcome. What I like is that the car has turned out well enough that even the automotive press recognizes that it's one of the best performance/cost choices in the market.

Interestingly in this mornings DRIVE section of the newspaper four out of the nine judges said that the BMW 135i would be their ideal or dream car..

The way I read that article was simply that those 4 finalists are all great cars - the 911 the best by a noticeable margin, the 135i winning because it's the best value for money example in that group... Lots of other performance cars out there beyond 60k, but their higher price tags would've only worked against them  |

Not sure why the FPV F6 wasn't considered for this category? It's new, it's quicker than the 135i (in a straight line at least) and it costs a few grand less. On the other hand, it's big, heavy and the brakes suck ... but that would have all come out in the judging process.
