Thinking about selling my evo..
Looking to possibly sell my 2006 evo mr. and get a 135i. am i crazy for doing this? the evo is tons of fun and ive wanted one for yearrss. it was evo/sti/s2000/e46 m. and at the time i picked up the evo. i couldnt pass it up. but i am now only 6 months in and bored already. i think the bmw no maintenance thing will keep me liking it.
-what worries me.... car payment. the weight of the car seat height (will i look like a child at 5'6) lol trunk space fold down seats? is 34,700 out the door +tax good? 100 % base 135i. only thing ill go for will be the extended no maintenance to 6 year 100k. thanks guys, pic for clicks. |

nice evo... what mods do you have?
everyone here shares a passion for the 1 series and the 135i in particular. i've had the car for 6 months, no issues and loving it. getting tempted do some serious mods though as i'm still stock. the biggest difference you'll find is going from awd to rwd, maybe thats why you are bored already. the 135i is a hoot to drive, the torque comes in so early and there is plenty of it. in answer to your questions... car payment - sorry i cant help you i'm in australia weight of the car - trust me you won't feel the weight, the 135i feels so light and nimble!! seat height - i'm 6 foot and i fit in fine although i've let girls drive it before and they feel fine, my ex was exactly 5 foot and she felt comfortable. trunk space - for a car so small i'm very impressed, more than enough room!! fold down seats - i only just found this out the other day, there are 2 levers in the boot which allow you to fold down the seats. overall, coming from an evo you will love the 135i. it might not handle as well in stock form, but everything else is an upgrade imo. |

Weight - The car is heavy indeed, but it is important to note that it is for a reason. The car feels rock solid from the inside, and rough roads really make you appreciate it. There were a few members who pointed out that the 135i held up like a TANK in an accident. Trunk space - I actually find the trunk space to be pretty good. If you are putting groceries/ bag packs its more than enough. If you plan to take large objects then it can def be cramped. Fold down seats - I have fold down seats and i love em! Im not sure if they are standart, I have a sport pack + prem pack. From what i understand, 9% is generally the most you can get off the price of the car, 7% is minimum. Look at Car Cost Canada to get an idea. Also, I recommend waiting on the extended maintainance as you can get that at any point. You can purchase it 2 years down the line, or right before your factory warranty is aout to expire. Its better to use that money towards a sport package as the seats are phenomenal. |

haha the tank is my line.
Yes Sport Package or MSport package is an absolute must. The thing that sucks about the 135i is the body roll. Just take $400 for a nice set of sways and this goes away. Ohh that and tires. Star Specs will do you weel while autoxing. The 135i is a lot of fun to do questionably legal things in...on a track of course Its all the fun of the Evo plus useability!!!!!!! |

BMW has the same aftermarket policy as almost all car manufacturers. Mods don't void warranties. Mods causing a factory part to fail voids warranty work on that claim. This is the same no matter what you drive.

Personally, if I had an EVO that new, I wouldn't dump it for the 135i expecting a lot more "fun". If you want a better daily driver that's a bit more upscale, then that's one thing. But it seems like you really love taking your car to its limits and I think it's going to take a few more mods on the 135i to make it more enjoyable on a track. Suspension is soft (compared to the EVO), the stock tires suck, and the car understeers. You can fix all that, but it's going to cost more than paying for a base 135i.
This is a great car, but so is the EVO. Unless you have plans to mod the 135i, I'm pretty sure you'll get bored of this car as well over time (based on the fact that you are already bored of your car).

I love how the back seats fold down because the trunk is slightly smaller than my E30's

H/O. Where in NY are you? I think I saw this grey Evo MR run at a Nassau Colliseum AutoX back in mid August. It was lifting a rear wheel just like yours/

from a purely numbers perspective, the evo probably is a better hnadleing, faster car. from an enjoying your car perspective, BMW wins hands down, and its not like the 135i cant hold its own on the track. And one thing the EVO will never have is the cache of being made in Germany.

You mean have faulty electronics and frequent breakdowns? I've had more problems in the 1 year of owning 2 BMW's than my 16 years prior with japanese cars. However, I don't regret my purchases one bit.

If you're bored with the evo, you'll hate the 135i.
The evo is more raw and more of a driver's car. From what I remember, steering feel/shifter/driving dynamics was fantastic in the evo 8/9. The only thing that would make me switch, Evo to 135i would be if the evo was too stiff for daily duties and you wanted to go more luxurious. Also, the free maintenance is an illusion...despite the free oil changes, the interval is 15k or 1y/oil change which is ridiculous. You will have to pay extra if you want them to do them every 5k. Prior to free maintenance, BMW specified oil changes were to be every 5k-7k. I wonder why.

Think it really boils down to what you want the car for. If your heavy into mods and track every weekend, keep the Evo.
You can do those things with the 1, but the 1 is more of a road driver that you can track if you want to. The Evo is more of a track only beast. IMO |

test drive, test drive, test drive
One thing of note: I recall at least one other person on this board who bought a 135i, was thrilled with it and then, 6 months later, was bored with it and got something else. Now if you're very rich, you can change cars like shirts, but for the average person, it's financially unsound. That said, if you tend to get bored with cars all the time, I wouldn't bother with the 1. It's great in the context of being a daily driver, but it's not a thrill ride. The car is way too comfortable and well mannered. If you're looking for pure driving exitement, I would recommend a Lotus or Porsche (used if necessary).

my views on each car...
i had an evo 8 for 6 months, the 1 is a much more relaxed car than the evo. Evo is buzzing, chomping at the bit, waiting to get on the boost and take off. I found its handling at the track to be much more neutral, much more willing to rotate, and overall much faster. The 1 is much more relaxed, can be shortshifted all over town. It will get up a go, but it's so smooth about it. As a result it feels slower in normal driving. If you are going to track it, prepare to put some work into it, the front end does not grip in stock form. The evo could be thrown into any turn, pointed in the right direction and then punted off. The 1 needs to be braked earlier, wait for the front to grip and then gently rotated. Also there is more power than the rears can handle, so some gentleness is needed on exit too. The reason I got rid of the evo was because I felt like I needed a more basic car at the track, hence the switch to a Lotus Elise. I felt like the evo was doing too much for me at the track since I was pretty novice. But I do miss that car, and it is bigger inside than the 1, and more practical actually. Also I am 37 and the big wing was a little bit much for me... |
