Front speakers replaced
Having just completed the DIY replacement of front speakers I would like to share my observation. The front door speakers have shallow mounting depth.
(a) It is important to avoid using thick foam seal and adapter ring (my stainless steel adapter is only 1 mm thick); and (b) instead of using spade connectors, just solder the speaker cable to the speaker terminals. I mounted the crossover below the speakers and close to the door hinge. Hopefully, this would reduce the magnitude of vibration taken up by the crossover when the door is being closed or... sometimes slammed by the passenger unintentionally. This would however require two ridges to be flattened. It is easy if you have the right tool. Another advantage of mounting the crossover at this spot is that I could adjust the dB of the crossover without removing the whole door trim panel. By removing the three screws on the trim panel and loosening a couple of clips near the crossover, I managed to slip my hand inside and conveniently adjusted the dB. The following is an extract from the user manual:
"We recommend that once the system is ready for listening the drive units should be run -in with medium volume setting, with music that has the full bandwidth of frequencies (sub-bass through to treble). This running-in period should be used for a few weeks to gain the full potential. After which the excellent performance of your K2 Power products can be fully appreciated." At the moment, it sounds slightly better than the stock speakers. I am sure that in a few weeks' time, I shall have more to report. |

For those who are interested in comparing the stock vs Focal on how they look, here are the photos of the stock 4" speaker on the door:--
Note the size of the magnet in the first photo and the paper cone in the second. On their appearance alone I am glad to have initiated this DIY project. |

Having listened to the front and rear speakers for a couple of months, I found it necessary to replace the stock amp in order to fully exploit the potential of the Focal speakers.
I shall proceed with the DIY project of installing the JL Audio XD600 this week. |

The DIY amplifier project has completed.
A new thread entitled "Amplifier replaced" will be posted this Sunday. The delay was due to the amplifier holder not readily available from the dealer. |
