Need help, lots of vibrations coming from winter setup
Hi guys,
Need some help here. I just put on my winter wheels/tires and I'm getting a lot of vibrations from them. On super smooth road surfaces like a freshly paved concrete highway, everything is normal, but on other road surfaces that aren't as smooth I get very annoying vibration from the tires. It's like they are picking up every single road imperfection. I'm thinking this is because of my JRZs and my stiffer suspension setup? I had these same winter wheels/tires on last winter and had no such vibrations. I've checked the pressures, the alignment is good, tread looks good, etc. I had no vibrations when I had my summer wheels/tires (Pilot super sports) on. Are the wheels not balanced? I'm confused because on some road surfaces they seem fine. the speed I'm going doesn't seem to matter either. What's happening!? Thanks |

What are you running on your suspension rebound/compression wise?
You might have it tuned such you're jacking the wheel when you're compressing the tire causing some odd vibrations. |

Turn down the dampers to full soft and see if the same thing happens. I bet you need more dampening |

I think the damper is too stiff on this soft tire. When you hit a small bump the shock quickly corrects but too quick for the soft tire, that is still compressing. This is leading to shocking the car, and thus making the ride very rough. You can overdamp or underdamp the car. Overdamping can lead to under oscillation. Like you hitting a bump then the whole road contact is transferred to the car even after the bump occured. Underdamping is when you don't dampen the bump enough so you get a wavy effect thru the car... like OE suspension. Turn the shocks down to make the ride as soft as possible. I turned down the fronts to full soft before I drove to work today, and I think it made a difference but I'm still getting vibrations. The rears are still at 11/22 so that might be where they are coming from now. I have to rip out the trunk lining to get to those MFers.
I appreciate the help, I think you're on the right track here |

Hopefully the rears will help calm down the vibrations |

Here's mine - Ohlins adjustment knob Slotted the carpet for easier access and it also allows for easier adjustment.

That looks good, I need to get those adjusters. Would it be hard to reach the knob just by cutting a hole in the carpet if you didn't have the external adjusters?

Okay, I cannot figure this out, the vibrations seem just as bad this morning as they ever were so I'm going to get my wheels/tires balanced to see if that is the issue.

Well after all this it turns out all 4 wheels were bent, can you believe that? I couldn't, but they straightened em' out and no more vibrations. They were fine last year, oh well, only $150 for all 4 wheels to get straightened, so I'm happy it was as simple as that.
Thanks for the help anyways! |

I have had bent wheels before. As careful as I am about potholes and other road irregularities, it happened. The shop showed me the run-out before they straightened them. It is amazing what a small bend can do to your ride quality, and like you, how much better they ride after having been straightened.
