Apex hyperblack Wheels Too Shiny...What to do??! Help
Hyperblack Wheels Too Shiny...What to do??! I put on Apex Arc-8s on this past weekend and they are way to shiny for my taste. Im thinking I should have gone anthracite. Well $1500 later after shipping and installation Im just not 100% happy with them. Its funny because these wheels change color depending on light. So in the shade or out of sun I love the subtle gray and they look amazing. When sun hits them they look like someone melted down old spoons and reshaped it into a tire, it just looks cheap because it too glossy.
I love the wheels and color but the glossiness is not good. Anybody have any idea what i could do? is there something i can apply to make these way less glossy? id bate to powder coat new wheels. Anybody have a set if anthicite they want to trade? Thoughts?

Apply a liberal dose of hooning, and let the brake dust handle the rest. My anthracite ones look like absolute shit after a few good track days.

Ha, I wanted hyperblack and ordered early in the APEX group buy to get them and they were out and told me I could have Matte Black or my money back. I haven't liked the matte black since day one for being so dull

The Hyper-blacks look absolutely gorgeous on overcast, or at sundown. Its when light hits them at a certain angle (kinda like this pic) Im not a big fan of. Thats why I figured if I could apply a matte finish they would be perfect. Any idea or recommendation on what to use and how to go about doing it? Thanks!

Well for professional results, you can have a body shop prep and spray them with a quality automotive matte clear, cost is dependent of the shop. Or you can get some matte clear in a spray can from an automotive paint supplier and do it yourself for much cheaper. But remember the job is only as good as the prep you put into it. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

Plastidip them with their clear/matte finish. Its easy, cheap, and will look good.

Funny you say that OP. I bought Apex 17" HB last year when they first introduced the 17" concave and thought HB's looked fantastic. I sold the setup and got my hands on another set (brand new 2014 production run) and also in HB. But I couldn't help notice this time around the HB has almost a chrome look to it and I don't like it. If anything the wheels look BETTER after they collect brake dust and have a more gunmetal / anthracite look.
This is my how my first set looked (more gunmetal) But my new 2014 set look like yours above with a chrome like finish. Last edited by 3002 tii; 06-04-2014 at 07:10 PM.. |

Not sure if you're talking to me or OP. As a fellow NJ resident I'd be more than happy to sell you my set but unfortunately they won't fit your 135i

Yea let the brake dust cake up on them. When I had my anthracite apex wheels you couldn't even tell they had brake dust on them, it just looked like a matte finish lol . . .
