I thought I might go with the 128 look, but I like the chrome grills and shadowline frame on SGM. Thanks for the pics.

TP, that looks hot! I was pretty curious about how this combo would look, especially on SGM. Hey, if you get a chance, could you please take a pic directly from the front with the entire car in view? It is important that we see how this looks with the rest of your car!

Hey Bullit,

Your SGM comment got me to thinking, the stock 135 grill with chrome grill bars might be more visually sensible for BSM while the 128 grill more logical for JB.:iono:Works for me.

Thanks.

Surname, from TP's pics, I imagine the shadowline frame with chrome bars would also be sensible for JB or BSM. I would order the shadowline grille, and test the combinations on the car, interchanging with the stock grille's frame and bars.

Shadowline is not gonna' happen on this car, the chrome outline of the traditional BMW kidney is intrinsic to a proper BMW. IMO.

With all due respect to tradition, I would rather be bothered by whether or not the particular frame looks good to you with consideration of the visual flow of the car as a whole. I think the mere presence of the kidney shaped grilles should take care of the tradition part anyway. It seems even BMW could care less about the chrome frame tradition if they are offering a shadowline one for this car.

Tradition is over rated. Isnt the whole point of tuning and modifying to be original and stand out from the crowd? Maybe I'm just young and rebelious or something. I think it gives this car a nice new fresh look. The ability to interchange the grills is great. It gives the owner a very easy way of standing out without throwing on huge spoilers and stickers.

"Tradition is over rated." A BMW tradition is the kidney-shaped intake, would you have BMW do away with that characteristic?

"Maybe I'm just young and rebelious or something." No way.

As promised, a pair of pics, during, then post swap. Learning how to remove the first grill was somewhat of a learning curve, took some minutes to figure out how to not scratch the surrounding bits or break anything, then, having performed the task, the second unit was dispatched in about 60 seconds. Thanks are due to Andy for the instructions to accomplish this totally easy DIY.

My old 2002 had silver surrounds with black grill bars, BMW sez' the 1 echoes the spirit of the 2002, least I could do was emulate that... The mod is perfect, obligatory, for JB.

Also, while you have the grills removed, you might as well take advantage of the opportunity and install a full compliment of obligatory dead bugs on the radiator.

Real chrome perhaps...not chrome-look plastic.

Tomorrow my shadowline grills go in!

Great write up. I did this today and it was fairly easy. It probably took me a half hour or so and I took pictures along the way. It was tricky getting all the tabs up at the same time. But it wasn't to hard at all, especially with these helpful instructions.

I managed to drop one screw down the hole that the hood latch fits in as I was screwing back in the front panel. I ended up having to pop out a grill and get at it from there. So in case you are as clumsy as me, don't put the grills in until you have put the rest back together. It could save you some time.

It presents a nice combination....not a completely "blacked-out" look and eliminates the big chrome frame.
So, how do I accomplish this awesome look on my SGM...simply love what you've done....Since you said OEM ...Guess I can get them from the dealer...Are they OEM for the 128 or 135? Like, what do I ask for besides Shadowline perimeter with the OEM chrome tipped interior slats??

As your car will be a 135, install the chrome grill inserts into the shadowline surround from the OEM part. Shadowline grills can be procured from a forum vendor, or, your local dealer through the parts department. The trim pieces snap together, it's an easy mod to accomplish. Really.

Yeah...what Surname said is correct. The OEM grilles are the ones that come with your 135. After you take them off of your brand new car you separate the frames from the grilles. Then you separate the frames and grilles of the shadowline grilles that you purchased and you put together a custom set of grilles.
So buy the shadowlines and a 135i and you have all the parts you need.
