BMW "iPhone Station & Link" thread......
Thought I would start a thread on this as it is now out in Germany.
This is the iPhone docking station that gives you BMW connect, Internet, Music and Bluetooth in your car. Know facts so far. Unit is €199 and the fascia on the X1 is €50, but presume it will be the same tray used on the 1 series as they do for nav portable so around £40. You can also add full Euro nav for €49. Available for 1 series, E8x and F25, 3 series and the X1 and X3. Fitted to an X1.... I was sent the install instructions over this morning but told not to give them out yet. So here they are....... BMW iPhone Station Install Instructions Be interesting to add comments and info as we get them to this thread. Sure it will work without coding, however manual selection of aux will be needed, where as it will automatically select it when coded. My guess anyway. Not available in UK yet. 15.08.2011 But is available from Germany. However, the software is not available from the UK App Store either, so no real point ordering from Germany as yet. I don't really come in here as I have sold our 1 series, but thought it may be of interest, so copied it from our UK forum? Obviously this was more UK based in tone when written, but presume the US is getting this too? Images take from...... http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=569973 |

Very cool. For me, the deciding factor will be whether coding is required.... because based on those instructions, labor is likely 3x the cost of this component. So if I can do the install, that's appealing. If I can't, well...

Install looks a piece of piss.
Will take 30 mins tops and very simple if you follow the instructions. Coding will be down to the dealer, coding via ISTA should take no more than 30 mins, probably more like 15, however, we all know BMW like to use any coding as an opportunity to load the latest software on your car which can take hours and then charge you for the privilege!! They need to start specifying coding times in the units price. I was told 30 mins for the Alpine kit by one dealer and 3 hours by another, so that was £60 from one and £360 from another one, which happens to be my local dealer. |

Interesting.
Considering how much of the dashboard real estate gets modified, you'd think they'd go ahead and make the bracket wide enough to accommodate an iPad. Of course, iPads are kinda heavy and might put a lot of stress on the bracket while driving. (I wonder if they planned it that way, tried it, discovered it wouldn't work, and then restricted it to iPhone/iPod.)
