Paint peeling on door
Anyone have any luck with a warranty claim for paint peeling?? I have a some tiny section like 1/3 inch that is starting to flake. Should I even waste my time with the stealership or just pay out of pocket??

If your car is under warranty it is absolutely covered. Go get it fixed. Have them check the entire panel, it's an omen of what is to come TBH. Sometimes clear coat likes to do that.

For sure.
Go get it checked out, as long as there is no damage that could have caused water to get under the coating they should help you.

Sounds like there was a repaint that the OP does not know about. Have never seen OE paint peel.
If it has been repainted, it won't be warranty. |

Typically cars can sometimes get damage in shipment from the factory to the dealer. IF this happens, most car makers will just repair the car before sending the car to the dealer. BMW does this at their PDI centers. AND I think in most states... the car maker doesn't have to disclose this paint repair unless the repair exceeds a certain amount(I think 12% of the car's MSRP, but again it depends on a state by state basis). Then IF the car was damage while the dealer owned the car, but before delivery to the customer... they can also repair the car BUT not legally disclose this fact to the owner. They only have to disclose the repair IF the repairs exceed 6% of the MRSP(or some percentage in that area). Again, the laws vary state by state. Either way... your car was painted, and you will need to have it repainted. Take it to a European body shop in your area... they will know whats what and give you the advice you need to the "next step" going back to your selling dealership. Good Luck, Dackel

6% of $50k is $3000! That's a lot of paint and body!

It depends on your state laws. Most states don't consider it an accident(and needed to be reported to the customer/dealer) until the car lands at the dealer's inventory.

Nice thought. So they sell the car as magically repaired to factory paint levels. Makes me wonder how much paint work is out there on these so called factory new cars.

Most people can spot a door ding or scratch. But not a color difference in panel to body panel. Nor can they understand fish-eyeing or spider webbing of a repaint job. That's why there are so many body shop hack places around. A friend of mine smellthebeans had his Cayenne-S repainted due to hail damage over here. His SAV was grey/silver... when he got the car back it was five different colors. When he posted pics on social media... most of his friends con't tell what the problem was. I could. So could his other car guy - friends.

For repainting, I'v had really good luck with Round Rock Collision (only BMW certified shop in Austin). They're owned by the same people as BMW of Austin, so if something is amiss they don't try to blame each other (from personal experience).
Everyone raves about Berli's, but you won't get to keep your warranty intact. Agree that you should take it to the stealership and get it looked at. Certainly not normal.

Happened to me. I bought a brand new 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix. Two weeks after delivery, the first time I hand washed the car, I found paint overspray on the passenger side door gasket and a long piece of masking tape on the bottom of the door. A body shop inspection determined that the entire door had been bashed in and repaired. Dealer claimed to know nothing. Factory rep blamed ME! I sued GM, Pontiac and the dealer. We settled out of court for a cash payment of $3,000. My lawyer kept $1,000 and I sold the car as fast as I could get rid of it.
So...stuff happens to cars before they are delivered. Every time I have bought a new car since 1988, I have performed a very careful inspection before taking delivery. The dealers don't like this, but they all let me do it.

After further inspection looks like a scratch might be the root cause of it. I inspected the door very carefully and no signs of a respray. I was wondering if a body shop can do some kind of careful touch up to avoid a respray. This car was wrapped once and I believe the scratch may of came of that entire process.

On the topic of dealers doing body/paint work from damage during delivery, it's a nice racket they have going. So they don't have to disclose this (based on your local area laws), yet when it comes time for you to trade in your car, they run a paint thickness meter on your car and bam....decreased value of your car due to body/paint work.
