Hey guys I am doing my "old" detail job this week on my E88 128i.
I used to gear up for the BMW CCA concours (local chapter) while in college and spend 14 hrs doing an in/out detail job by hand. In 4 years My 1988 325i placed 2 best of shows. In 2010 when my car was brand new I took home a best of show with little effort and a step by step application of Zyomol Estate Glaze - (Atlantique glaze). For this year I'm using the Swissvax paint cleaner/polish with Porter Cable. I'll use the same wax - Atlantique - hand applied (curing procss followed). Zymol Field glaze carnauba detailer as a topper. Swissvax interior wood glaze (for interior wood trims). BMW Leather Care kit. Zymol glas wash - glass cleaner. BMW interior cleaner (interior detailer/cleaner). BMW Convertible Top cleaner/protectant. Zymol clear - car wash soap. Adam's in/out - engine bay detailer. Griots Wheel Cleaner Griots Wheel Cleaning Clay Eagle One - Keep Clean Wheel (protectant). BMW tire shine Griots Plastic Polish Meguairs Mirror Glaze - plastic cleaner Meguairs Mirror Glaze - plastic polish Mothers Metal polish Meguairs Ultimate polish (Door Jamb polish) Meguairs Mirror Glaze "Cleaner Wax" - Door Jambs Meguiars Mirror Glaze Final Inspection - Final follow ups. Will be used consistantly. Hand washing with 3 bucket method will be the start. Starting the detail on the wheels , metal, and engine bay tomorrow. *I plan on posting pictures before/after. This will be 90% hand applied work. Just me working on it. Should take 14 hours in total . |

After 2 days of paint prep and getting yelled at by the wife..lol..I'm exhausted. I'm also forced into a 3 day process as my car is outside. The garage is too crowed to work in. Tenant's remodeling junk and his late 60's buick is in there. It's outside. I have to hand wash the car each day. So far I've: Cleaned/polished/sealed the wheels (poor boys wheel sealant) - got this in the mail tuesday Clayed the entire car (mild poor boys clay). Zymol HD Cleanse paint cleaner (polish). Convertible top cleaning/protectant (applyed/cleaned with horsehair brush). Mixed/applied blue water metallic touch up paint (inner rocker panel). Cleaned gas cap area. Lots to do still. The concours is Saturday. Have about 7 hours to get it all done (based on my available "free time" ) My dad is coming over in his VO 1M tho to steal some of my pro detail towels (I have more than anyone in my family & each one of them is a BMW CCA member). I'll be sure to take plenty of photos of our cars along with my mom's E88 @ the concours. current detail photos coming...

2 days of paint prep finished.
Here's a pic: http://www.fototime.com/DA66C8A9475D998/standard.jpg -Our annual BMW CCA Concours is today and I failed. I'm not taking the car because it has no wax on it. Kinda pleased though. The paint is perfectly set up for Zymol Atlantique wax. Rest of the car is clean but the wheels and tires were messed up with wheel protectant. I ended up removing the protectant (EO "Keep Clean Wheel") and applying poor boys wheel sealant. Tires were scrubbed and cleaned. I'll finish the car in about a week and tuck it away in the garage for next weekend Here's some sloppy photos of my results so far minus the wheels/tires cleaning.. Entire album so far (updated): http://www.fototime.com/inv/AAF4C8A108E0A27

Much respect for the dedication, I spent something in the neighborhood of 4 hours this week washing, claying the hood/bumper/sideskirts, sealing, waxing, and a quick interior clean. This is another level, your arms must be tired as hell! It'll look great when it's done, that's for sure

I ended up taking my car to the Concours with just polish and about 2 passes of Megs final inspection detailer... Car looked great and I placed in 2nd place. My dad's 1M won best of show. ( I detailed it for him lol).
*Anyways..It's been raining and I didn't begin the wax process. My car was driven to work today (5 miles from home) but it's out there exposed with just polish on the finish. It rained 2x today..so the car is now dirty and possibly has water spots. The paint was beading up in the rain very well surprizingly. Probably was the detail spray. Insight needed here... I have a booked weekend, however I personal days on Tuesday and Wednesday from work to complete the job. Tuesday's my birthday, I'd rather be detailing! *Photos from the concours are coming as soon as I have the chance to upload them...stay tuned.

At it again to finally finish the job this weekend. Saturday and Sunday are the days I have. I'm going to try to finish most of it Saturday. My polish job was a waste due to no wax going on the paint...and it was done almost 2 weeks ago...as stated in prevous posts.
I'm looking for advice to cut my time in half, as Waxing will take the most time (there's also a 4 hour window to re-buff everything in the paint feeding process). *Should I re-polish with HD Cleanse paint cleaner? I'll also add a glaze polish on top of the paint cleaner. ? Does the paint need another paint cleaning with paint cleaner? If I don't get insight on this from anyone I'm going to do this process. No more clay though! 1.) Zymol HD Cleanse 2.) Meg's Swirl X 3.) Prima Amigo 4.) Zymol "Destiny" Estate Glaze wax That's it...looking forward to getting this done finally! Lots of hours required!

what would you recommend to revive the look of the lower plastic grille on 128i?

The mesh looking inserts on the lower part of the bumper/ front spoiler? I use Griots spray on car wash (lubricant that adds gloss and some wax protection). I scrub it with a light touch horse hair brush. After that if you want..add a interior protectant wipe (I use griots) It's like a dressing that can also be used on tires...
