To prepare for the next gen.
The E90 3 series officially ends production as of October of this year, or December of this year for South African models. The M3 sedan thus ends in October as well (it is produced in Leipzig, IIRC). Here is the thread that confirms this:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=542482

This sort of leaves MY2012 in limbo for the 3 series sedan. At this point it seems that the F30, coming sometime in the spring of 2012, will be the MY2012 3 series. However, typically BMW tends to introduce new models as one year earlier than their calendar year debut in the US. So it is still theoretically possible that the F30 will be called a MY2013. This, however, would present a somewhat unprecedented situation whereby they would actually have to *skip* the 2012 model year for the 3 series. That seems far fetched. But theoretically it is possible.

The F30 is going to begin as a 2012 Model Year.

Thanks Jason.

That makes the most sense given that we now know the E90 will be out of production before the end of 2012. Still, since we know the F30 won't go on sale here until sometime in the spring (late spring is the rumor), this will mean that the first few months of 2012 will have BMW dealerships in the US selling MY2011 E90s - and ones that were produced, at the latest, in December 2011. It seems a strange business strategy. Not only are they forced to sell cars that will be perceived as a year old, but also the brand new F30s will not get that typical advantage a new car gets of having its model year be greater than the calendar year (which people see as an advantage for resale). This whole thing is such a surprise - exactly the opposite of how the E46->E90, E39->E60, and most recently, E60->F10 changeovers were handled. It is almost like BMW NA was trumped by AG on this one or something.

Anyway, it is what it is.

Kinda sad. I'd kept my place if they'd offered DCT.

Nice thread title no doubt!

Coupé Sport Leichtbau

In a perfect world, SOP & EOP info re MY2012 1M Cp CSL would not be missing on that datasheet.

To be clear, the production schedule posted is for the US.

Sorry for any confusion. Other markets may or may not see a 1M in 2012. Remains to be seen.

Agreed! Will be quite a collector car for sure! One year production run, oh yeah!

I think these strange variations in production timing are being driven by regulatory concerns. Each year the fuel economy standards get tougher so bunching production into earlier years may be beneficial.

Dad just got an allocated order in here in ATL. So a good 128 and 1M picture will be coming near the fall

I would believe that the M2 would not initially be released with the new 2 series badges? It seems to me just how the 1 series were released that the "M" car could take anywhere from 1-2 years after release?

So does this mean that BMW follows Audi with coupes being version+1 from the sedan?... The 5&6 series already do this, but will 3er coupes become 4 series cars??? Kind of makes sense if 1&2 and 5&6 series are doing this.

The 335is N54 has a different rating than the 1M N54 (320 bhp vs. 335 bhp). That 15 bhp bump for the 1M N54 indicates that it’s not the same as the 335is N54 (you don’t get something for nothing after all). So whatever modification that was done to get the additional 15 bhp could be the reason why it would not pass the 2012 emission regulations in the US, hence no 2012 1M.

As for the Z4 sDrive35is, will it be produced in 2012 (no Z4 production sheet was posted)? The Z4 sDrive35is N54 does have the same rating as the 1M N54, but that doesn’t mean they are totally identical, either.

True. It's not that they have the same rating, it's that the ARE IDENTICAL, that makes them identical. Even the "revised piston rings" are the same for both.

If you don't want an M vehicle with a non-M engine, then don't get one. But don't state or imply something that is known to be different.

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream.

My lease isn't up until June 2013. I figured the timing of this car wouldn't work for me and this seems to confirm it. I know I could get out of my lease one way or the other if I really wanted to (albeit at some unplanned cost), but I think I'll wait and see what the landscape looks like in 2 years. Hopefully an M2 will be in the picture by then, but I doubt it.

The fact the 1M will be a one year, one off car only has nothing to do with the engine in my mind. The X1 and 1 series are both produced on the same line in Leipzig. And since the X1 is so massively popular in Europe they are actually exceeding production to meet their demands for it there. This is why they delayed the release for the X1 in the US from this late summer/early fall to next year (excessive popularity in Europe). When the X1 comes to the US (2012) the 1M will be done. We now know this will be in Janurary.

X1 is pretty cool. Seen a few of them around town. Really don't see what the 1M has to do with the X1 though.

As was indicated, they are both built on the same line at Leipzig.

The e90 3 series ends production in November, so the 335 is dead.

The 2012 BMW 1 Series will be built at the BMW Regensburg plant.
http://www.bmw-werk-regensburg.de/lo...tent_news.html
"Der neue BMW 1er - gebaut im BMW Werk Regensburg" (i.e. the new BMW 1 Series - built at the BMW Regensburg plant)
So what about the 1 Series production lines in the BMW Leipzig plant where the 1M is currently built (alongside the 1 three-doors, 1 Coupé, 1 Cabrio and X1) ?
http://www.bmw-werk-leipzig.de/leipz.../de/index.html

I mistakenly thought that all 1 Series were built in the Leipzig plant and that, due to the second gen 1 Series, building the 1M after December 2011 became materially impossible because of a change in production lines (apart from policy reasons not to mix two generations of 1 Series models).
