Boost

I have read several threads writing about boost. From what I gather boost is in reference to a turbo. And that it does not matter much with a 135i turbo. That a gauge is more for looks than anything else.

But in drag racing does it also apply to cars running turbos? When asked about how much boost, what are the values and what do they mean?

On some of the TV shows on the Speed channel they ask the driver about his/her boost and how much it is. I am guessing that it deals with turbos. I am guessing that boost deals with when the turbo kicks in and it gives the engine a boost. And I am guessing that it can be measured. Just wondering what they are talking about.

Found this on another link. "Well without a gauge you won't have the actual output number but according to BMW these engines make maximum torque from 1500rmp (1200 if n55) to the 5k range before power drops off. So theoretically it should be in full boost between those rpm numbers. This Is also why you can't quote feel the turbo. With full torque/boost output starting at such a low rpm there's really no time to anticipate it. It's just past idle basically" And I believe max boost is around 20psi. So I am guessing that the boost refers to the amount of air, from the Turbo, being forced into the engine.

Generally they mean how much pressure is the turbo generating. This usually displayed/talked about in the US as PSI...pounds per square inch. In metric standard countries its usually displayed as BAR. Generally the higher the psi, the more power the engine will make. That is of course all subjective to the internals of the motor and how it's built. One could be pushing 7psi of boost and the other could be making 14 psi...but their power levels could be equal depending on how the motor is built.

I think some websites that talk about fundamentals of how a turbo car works will help you understand as well.
