For info I remember on some older BMW's that the dealership or factory needed to individually adjust a constant that was used for KM/L (or MPG) calculations for each car. There was some way you could change it yourself by entering some sort of maintenance mode on the dash with a sequence of button pushes. I'm not sure if this is still required however given the extremely varied fuel consumptions this may be the reason behind it. The best way to check your fuel is manually as some people have suggested. Just be sure to use the same bowser each time you fill as any slope the vehicle is on can noticeably change the amount of fuel you can fit in the tank.
