removing wheels

does it annoy anybody else when you remove the last bolt on your alloys & if your not holding the wheel tight it drops on to your caliper, either marking inside of wheel or caliper, especially if you have bigger aftermarket brake's on,i made this locating pin up out of an old bolt with M12X1.5 thread, i cut the top off it & rounded it,now i just remove one bolt screw this in & it holds the wheel in place, also make's fitting back on easier as wheel is located so no turning it to find bolt holes(excuse the rusty disk's just washed the car & put it away)

Makes sense, or you can just run studs all the time.

Especially swapping wheels, like I do, almost every week, running studs with an electric impact cuts the time immensely.

I run Vorshlag Studs

indeed very annoying, thus great idea!

Might make 2 of these pins; that will make it even easier to to align wheel and hub holes without mishaps.

Wheel hangers have been available for a long time.

Personally, I far prefer wheel studs.

iirc they're illegal in several EU countries. Besides that there are 2 contact areas per screw that might be installed incorrectly (iso 1 with regular wheel bolts) I can't think of a decent reason.

BMW has used lug bolts for wheels as long as I can remember... certainly since the early 80s.

In the past... the factory tool kit in the trunk in BMWs included a wheel hanger that can be used for hanging the wheel to install or to hold the wheel when removing the wheel.

Looks like cost cutting, as well as the advent of run flat tires has caused BMW to not provide a wheel hanger in the trunk kit any longer.

Bingo.

I do the same. I only jack the car up enough now to just get the wheel off the ground plus maybe an inch. That way the wheel doesnt even have any distance to fall off and have the backing plate hit the inside of the wheel.

One does have to mind that the wheel doesnt fall on it's face however.. these new wheels don't have the large hubcentric lip inside them like the E30/E28 days..
