I liked my E46 M3. If I needed a 4 door I'd have considered an E90, admittedly slightly reluctantly. Great motor though, good cars, better than ours in a number of ways. Not 100% my cup of tea, but the 1M/ M3 rivalry is a little overblown in my experience, at least here in the bay area where you see plenty around.

Driven an E46 M3, E92 M3 and swapped in a 5 minutes test drive instantaneously to my current E82 1M
The 1M is without a doubt the best Bimmer I have ever driven, the E92 M3 feels like a M1 Abrams tank compared to the 1M. Everybody declared me nuts, but after all reviews the comments faded away Now after 3 year owning and driving one, I can`t find a descent successor, probably the Cayman GTS could be it, because I`ll never want a big fat Bimmer again, a small, light(er) car will do the job just fine for me. Although I like the upcoming F8X M, it is too big / stretched for my liking. The ///M235i isn`t bad performance wise, but I don`t like the exterior. Anyway, I`ll take my time to think it over. Short story; I`m a full confessor and believer the 1M is miles ahead a E92 M3 |

I own both an 09 E92 M3 and a 1M and I really really love the 1M. The M3 is great, a big more refined and maybe even stable on longer corners. But the 1M is just so fun. It's possibly the best car I've ever driven.

100% agree. i am reeeally considering the cayman gts. just by driving the cayman s i was already blown away. cannot wait to test the gts (probably not a huge difference, but the cayman s is already such a great car, it doesnt need much more)

Everyone M3 owner i run into wants to race, you just act mature and give them the cold shoulder tell all of a sudden the inner beast attacks and they just see my tail lights.
I love the 1M it's a beautiful machine and it's very rewarding to drive. I am very happy with the stock power levels, I don't think I would need more. I will never sell it. It's a keeper for sure. As to getting another BMW... I simply can't betray my beautiful 1M.

A Spyder/ R version will at least come with serious weight loss as part of the package. If the come out with a Cayman GT4, on the other hand, that's when things get interesting. For example Porsche has started extending the GT car's warranty to cover track use, where if you track the GTS the warranty will be instantly voided. So nice car, but I might suggest a used S, waiting for an R, or praying for a GT4. $.02

Nothing has been released, but Porsche has recently left hot models for late in the model cycle, so we wouldn't expect leaks about one yet. The 981 has been out just over a year and we already have a GTS. The 991 will be due for a facelift/ power bump in 2015 which should clear room for a hotter model beneath it. Anything less than an R or GT4 and I couldn't see spending money to buy new- too easy to save a fortune getting a used S and upgradinging it. An R or GT4 however could be a keeper like the 1M.

Congrats and welcome to the family. But, if you ever want to pawn off the m3, I'd like to have the same perfect family.

I don't think the second hand market is balanced....When I was shopping for cars a BMW specialist scoffed when I said I wanted a two year old ~10 k miles 1m car fully loaded for ~£40k ( his was up for £42.5k 2011 and 7k miles and would've been £44.5k new - so I was seeing where his sticking point was) and said he'd let me know when leggier examples came up and implied I was being unrealistic. I figured 10% depreciation in three years was generous. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the driver qualities and apparent edginess of the shorter and lighter 1m.... and even notice the less torque than my old lightly modified 335 a little.... Though the practically CVT qualities of the DCT do a good job of trying to hide that. If you keep the car in dry storage and no miles I'm sure these will be a collector car, but I cannot believe that current used prices which are still showing practically no depreciation is realistic. My point is that the m3 had already taken a pasting in second hand market because the new m3 is nearly here. What happens when the m2 comes out how many people will jump into that? P.s. I would've bought a 1m at £36k but those had big miles. I got a sub 5 k miles 2013 m3 fully loaded and individually specified as one of 30 apparently for £41k - that car cost £70k new 5000 miles ago and is really probably still running in. I am in a porsche/M/AMG commuity for kind of long time, most of them are enthusiast which always give me positive commit about my 1M. While others will be so attracted by my 1m after i shown them some parking lot drifting technique
that is lots of fun driving this car. |

When the 1M was announced, I thought, "Awesome, a $46k M car that I can pick up used in a couple years for mid to low $30s" Plan - set.
Wrong. Now at over $50k, there is no way I could justify buying a 1M over an e92 M3. Not because I do not appreciate what it is, because I really do, but because I think the M3 is also a great car with more bang for the buck. The 1M is a cool car, that they should have made more of. |
