No 98 Octane This Morning.... :(

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to get some advice...

I got stuck in traffic badly today.. 2 hrs and hardly moved. I know i shouldnt of let the car get to reserve fuel but anyways by the time i got out of traffic i had a mere 12km left in tank.........

I found a service station caltex which only had 95 octane vortex. I turned the procede off and put in 4 litres, just to get me to the closest BP with 98 octane.

Will the 95 octane cause any problems? I guessing it would be best to run down the tank with the procede off and then have fresh tank of 98?

I learnt my lesson of letting the car run down on fuel...

95 is fine for the odd fill up.

I would run down the tank and fill 98, or simply put an octane booster in the current 95.

It's not THAT bad.

Yep what Alex said. Do not wait until you run down the tank, fill up with 98 RON as quickly as possible to increase the octane of the fuel your car is getting. Don't bother with octane boosters, they are pointless.

If you ever get caught short, just add as little 95 RON as you can get way with and tank up with the good stuff ASAP.

A little 95 wont hurt. Never run your tank down. You don't know what crap is sitting at the bottom of your fuel tank.

95 is completely fine but I always run V-Power 98. Also, don't be afraid to let the tank go down to zero. I do it on almost every fill up. I've driven about 25km on the highway when zero has come up so there is a bit of fuel in the reserve although I'd only recommend driving a 5-10km and taking it easy.

Yeah, I often go past 0. It's just a final warning that you should fill up ASAP otherwise you really will get stuck without any fuel. I know there's still another 5L left in the tank still after the warning comes on so it's all good.

My brother in law has been a mechanic for 20 years and has seen an amazing amout of crap at the bottom of the fuel tank. He's always told me never let the fuel tank run low coz it could suck up crap from the bottom of the tank. But as these cars are only 3 to 4 yrs old max it's probably not a major issue YET.

You obviously didn't see me relieve my kidney stones into your tank.

The fuel pickup points are in the lowest part of the tank. It's always drawing from the bottom so it's irrelevant whether the tank is full or empty.

It's not like a bottle of red wine that's been sitting on the shelf for years and you are going to decant off the top and leave the sediment behind.

I agree. 95's perfectly fine and won't damage the car at all. A lot of guys in the USA can't even get the equivalent of 98 (93 over there) and run on 95 (91 over there) the entire time. Even with JB3 on the lower map settings.

You will get "slightly" less performance and "slightly" less fuel economy but don't sweat it.

Exactly, I say this to everyone who says don't let your tank run low'.

It's logical, the pickup is at the bottom, not the top!

Edit: also, that's why fuel filters were invented

Now there's some advice!

G'day,

Yes, I've been overseas for a few months with work. Nothing exciting. I see lots of guys have picked up their 1Ms since I was last here. I've still got the 135 and she started first pop after 2 months in the garage.

I'm out of warranty now but decided to hang onto it for a while yet. It still puts a smile on my dial. My wife has convinced me that if I ever buy another 1 series it will need to be a DCT. She dislikes the manual. So if we ever get more 1Ms in Australia and if they ever make them in DCT I'll probably buy one. Seems unlikely though.......

Glad to see you're still around mate I think most of us will keep the 135i after warranty, it really is such good value and it makes me smile on a daily basis. I think your wife is onto something - a 1M with DCT would be one hell of a car! The 1M in manual is still an amazing car though but a 1M DCT would look even better on paper. I think BMW have their reasons for not equipping it with DCT, because it's marketed as a car for purists and also if it came with DCT it would beat the M3 on most tracks. Hope you keep enjoying the 1er for years to come, I know I will

I filled up with 95 once... I had really long cranks... thought the HPFP was about to die

then when I topped up with 98... the long cranks disappeared

coincidence? Evidence of paranormal activity? you decide
