For how long do you keep your old car papers?
Doing some cleanup here and was wondering...
I had a 99 Audi A4 which I bought in 09/07 and sold in 05/08. I still have all paperwork for the buying transaction, all maintenance records, and the sale transaction. Likewise, I later owned a CPO'ed 05 Mazda 6 which I bought in 01/09 and sold in 05/10 (for the same price, best investment ever, crisis played out well for me lol). I also still have all papers from buying, maintenance, and sale. Until when should I keep all this stuff? |

I too have kept my buying transactions, sale transaction and copy's of the Pink slips.Rides- Gti-vr6 DE, 99.5 A4 and 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
However ALL maintenance records(tons of those) go with the new owner(s). I have privately sold all these vehicles and the new owners have been happy as hell. Do to the preventive maintenance i do and keep all receipts, i do make more $$$$'s when let them go. Keep this stuff for memories/history and a good laugh. My Gti was my first car, Mother had to Co-sign and my finance interest was 7.2% back in 1997.

I kept the window stickers and original PO/Sales Reciept for my EVO VIII and E46 M3 for sentimental value. They have their own places in my filing cabinet. Along with the vanity plate and pictures of each of them. Kinda like my daughter's birth certificate and pictures.

I try to give all those records to the new owners for their use. Like the above post, I keep a little something for a momento, but not service records or the like. I suppose what you should keep is the bill of sale inoformation....

Since my first "real" car I have kept everything. All the clunkers and crap I had in college and high school are long gone, but my last 4-5 cars I have kept everything. I also have traded in every car to the dealer (who would take those records and throw them away for legal reasons anyway), so, like Nfiddy5 said, I guess they have a special place in my filing cabinet. Why? I don't know.

+1 I keep the window sticker or copy if new owner wants original and bill of sale.

Indefinatly, I have an issue with paperwork.
If I was selling private owner I would redact the personal info and include all the Mx paperwork. But I still have the paperwork for a crappy Celica I bought in 1997 and got rid of in 1997. |
